Dehumanization can lead to objectification, which can lead to violence. In society today, many women and men are dehumanized, objectified, and violated. Women are often dehumanizied, because society has a certain look for women. If women don’t look the certain way society wants them to, they are automatically objectified. However, women ,who do fit society’s criteria, are most likely to become more physically attractive (Stohs-Krause). Men see this as an opprontunity to engage in these women, which can lead to violence. Most people view women, in these ads, as objects of pleasure, that leads to the portrayal of women being bought or owned for one’s pleasure. As soon as a woman is seen as an object, there is no stopping a person from violating them, because in their eyes that women can be dehumanizied (Vaes, Paladino, and Puvia). Women who back down from challenges that men set are this powerful in a workplace are what drives sexism. When women decide to live up to the challenge they are faced with harassment, lower pay wages, and gendered discrimination. When men are this powerful in a workplace they take that power and exert it at home. This leads to the evil of domestic violence and even rape. Mass media plays a great part in our lives. Television, newspapers, magazines surround us everywhere every day of our lives. All of them are stuck with different kinds of ads. But how often do we pay attention to the real sense of those ads and the ways the advertisers try to sell various products to us? We see dissoluteness and challenging behavior every day in life and we got so used to it in, at first sight, such small pieces of film, and apparently of our day routine, as advertisement, that we hardly notice the big picture. For over twenty years, Jean Kilbourne has been writing, lecturing, and making films about how advertising affects women and girls. In her essay, "‘The Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt': Advertising and Violence", Kilbourne looks very deep into the connection between abuse and ads. She develops a theory in which she emphasizes dehumanizing women in ads, and shows us what terrible things sometimes can be concealed behind a simple and funny ad, and what consequences it can lead to in the end. As for me, I strongly agree with Kilbourne, and I am convinced, that harmless at first sight, advertisements sometimes turn out to be damaging, violent and insulting, especially with regard to the weak, such as women.…

Throughout world, and particularly in mainstream media, women and girls are depicted in a sexualizing manner. I know that this exists because I have grown up in a society that objectifies women and it has had a negative effect on my whole life as well as the lives of all my female friends. Sexual objectification is vicious and it needs to stop because it is harming women everywhere; women are essentialized as sex objects rather than individuals with personalities, thoughts, emotions, and their own desires.…

Advertisements are an everyday part of our lives, whether we look at them subconsciously or consciously they influence us. Imagine how many ads you have seen in your lifetime and how they have affected you over time. “Two Way a Woman Can Get Hurt” by Jean Kilbourne is an article about how the objectification of women in advertising can lead to violence because ads shows a truth and this truth is that women are more likely to get abused. Jean Kilbourne successfully attempts to inform women that objectifying people in advertisement makes violence seem acceptable by using logos and pathos. However, her weakness is that she writes with too many hasty generalizations and also with some post hoc.…

Women, beauty, sex, money--they may seem like completely unrelated words but when combined together create a powerful driving force within American society. This “driving force” is known as media, though, in this essay, I will be focusing mainly on advertisements. There are a variety of ads being made everyday and can be spotted almost everywhere; billboards, magazines, shops, and even online, just to name a few. However, many of these ads--ranging from food to fashion--have began involving women in them. Not just any women either; these women are the idealized women American society has conceptualized as they flaunt their bodies whilst also implying sexual themes. Individuals, literally and figurative, by into the way these advertisements…

The media has the ability to aggravate and cultivate the minds of those who constantly engage and partake in the deliverance of such content. One theory that impelled research on how cultivation can affect the mind and attitudes towards a particular issue was the cultivation theory. Young adults are the ones who the media hopes to garner a lot of attention from, which is another reason why popular culture and hip-hop music should carefully depict how women are portrayed. In From Dr. Dre to Dismissed : Assessing Violence, Sex, and Substance Use on MTV, author Stacy L. Smith argues, “Young adults between the ages of 16 and 30 are the most likely age group to consume rap/hip-hop music, and in turn, may become desensitized to the derogatory lyrics condoning relationship violence and sexual aggression.” Smith argues a great point, because the media attempts to cultivate the mind into viewing women in a negative light, and when you become so very accustomed to engaging in popular culture and hip-hop music that degrades and dehumanize women, you become insensitive to dismissive misogynystic beliefs in relation to women. The cultivation theory is a logical concept because it numbs you to sexual degradability of women; as well as sexual harassment and sexual violence — you basically become blind to the prejudice contempt of…

Women have the hardest struggle against sexism. These prejudices can affect them in hundreds of ways from the workplace, home, and their safety while out and about. Nationally, women remain subject to horrible mistreatment such as domestic violence and sexual assaults. Globally the amount of abuse to women is disgusting. War rapes, gendercide, genital mutilation, honor killings not only transpire against women, but continue to be accepted as a component of particular cultures. The predominant issue a majority of women face daily is inequality between men and women faced in the media, workplace, marriage, and…
