With the rise in the middle class households, better connectivity between cities, paucity of time and falling fares, air travel has witnessed a growth by leaps and bounds in India. With more planes taking off and landing at Indian airports, the demand for bigger and better facilities, too, has increased manifolds. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is viewed as one of the best and most modern infrastructure complex of its kind in the country with the capacity to handle hundreds of aircraft and several thousand passengers daily. With the growth in the passengers’ demand, government plans to develop newer airports that have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers per annum. The domestic terminal of IGIA remains extremely congested and is not able to handle sudden increase in the passenger flow. Even the security queue area itself is very badly managed. Since the passengers spend more time in security process they prefer to board the flight as quickly as possible without bothering to eat or buy in the waiting lounge which results in loss of commercial business.
At present IGIA has the capacity to manage 4,08,95,555 passengers, 3,00,450 aircraft movement and 6,96,539 cargo handling. In its initial phase the construction of airport would require the government to acquire large pieces of land. Thus the farmers residing within the target area will prosper as they will have the incentive to sell their land to the government at profitable rates. This option for them will be a blessing in disguise. For the passengers it will have a positive impact as they no longer will have to struggle to reach IGIA on time if they are travelling from far off places. They can choose to travel from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam International Airport as per their convenience. Addition to that, the initiative to include shops, hotels, convention centres, food courts, malls and parking facilities etc. within the 4000 acre land would help them to avoid the inconvenience they face while searching for boarding and lodging facilities. It will also help them to purchase any needed item from the airport itself incase if they are in a rush to catch the plane. It will also provide an incentive to the different entrepreneurs to engage in commercial transactions with the passengers over wide variety of consumer products they have to offer thus having a scope for profit
