Born in Thames, South East London, he was raised in Lewisham. His father didn’t have a permanent job and hence shifted from one to another, while his mother was a nurse. Delroy moved with his mother, in his teenage years, to Canada and later on to the US. Currently he resides in Oakland, California.

He then appeared in the movie More American Graffiti in which he played the role of an army sergeant. He then quit acting in movies for almost ten years, to concentrate on his theater career. His Broadway debut was "Master Harold"... and The Boys. He then went on to act in a touring production. He portrayed Harold Loomis in the Broadway play, Come and Gone, which brought him a Tony nomination. After coming back to the film industry in the 90's, he did 3 roles in Spike Lee's films that gave a better recognition to his work. The characters he played were different in each of the films. He was a drug dealer in one of the movies, a psychotic gangster and the father of an African-American family. The year 1996 proved to be the biggest year for Delroy as he got major supporting roles in six movies. He was nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Soul of the Game. He also worked for The Simpsons, where he did a guest role as Gabriel. Since 2000, he has been doing small but memorable roles and also was seen in many TV series like Kidnapped, The Chicago Code and Believe. He also gave his voice for the animated series UP in 2009 for Bita, a rottweiler dog. He has been nominated for various awards for his roles in more than ten movies.
