What is the difference between a 4 dollar pen and a 4 dollar box of pens?
The expensive pen can be relied on more than the entire box of pens.
You will break, loose and forget a pen from that box time and time again. But that 4 dollar one? Youll keep track of it, it will last longer and you remember who you loan it to. It’s a good reliable pen. It doesn’t give you issues.

In 2006 a small arms study was performed on all the standard issues firearms for the army in Afghanistan and Iraq. One of the of the finding about the M9 was that in a controlled environment with high quality ammunition and magazines the pistol performed perfectly fine. As we all know, the issued M9 has a bad reputation as being …show more content…
pretty much useless when you need it. The study found that the main reason for this was the low-quality ammunition and magazines the army gave out, coupled with environmental factors. This caused the perceived reliability to be very low, 48% being dissatisfied with the weapon. This is compared to 11% for the M4 and 24% for the M16.
Dependability outside the marine corps is usually used to refer to a system. Whether that be a computer, a car or a weapon. The word itself can be broken down to many components and even those components can be broken down.
Merriam Webster defines dependability as “Capable of being depended on or reliable.” Past that, the term can be broken down into three pieces.
They are attributes, threats and means.
First there are the attributes. Qualities of the system used to assess the overall dependability. The first is availability, or being ready to provide the correct service. We see this as always being there for your marines, or an open-door policy. Second is reliability. This is the continuity of the correct service, or always providing the same service, no matter the situation you are in. this helps build respect in trust with the services you provide. Lastly is integrity. The Absence of improper alterations to the system. We need to be able to make the right decisions.
Second are the threats to the system. The threats can be described as the issues that will affect a system negatively. There are three primary threats that we can associate with how we lead marines. Faults, errors and failures. Faults can be described as a defect causing a loss of dependability. Errors are discrepancies between what we intended and what happened. Failures are a culmination of not correcting or addressing your errors and faults. Faults and errors do not automatically mean failure, but ignoring them and allowing them to propagate over time will certainly lead to a
failure.
Lastly, we have the means. These can be defined as the actions we take to prevent the threats. There are three primary means we use. Prevention, being able to see a precursor to a fault and correcting for it. Tolerance, or having an acceptable level or errors and faults but still receiving the positive outcomes we desire. Forecasting, being able to predict likely issues that will arise so you can circumvent them. All of these work together and involve each other in making sure our system is able to provide the outcome that we desired regardless of the threats that arise.
In summary, we have broken down systematically what makes up Dependability. The attributes or qualities of a system. The threats or negative possibilities affecting a system, and the means, knowing the possible progressions of the threats and preventing and stopping them from continuing. All though we separated and ordered all of these points, it does not mean they are more or less important. Every piece of this puzzle combines to form a larger piece that is an effective leader. Any way here’s wonder wall.
