Serotonin is involved in many processes of relaying messages in the brain and there is growing evidence that if these serotonin pathways are disrupted, it can lead to development of depression (Green, 2014). Endorphins are involved in improving mood by blocking messages that relay pain, which therefore boosts mood (Scheve, 2009). Another benefit of exercise on the brain is that it redirects negative thoughts. Fixating on negative thoughts erodes the beneficial chemicals found in the limbic system in the brain. As the limbic system controls mood and emotion, worrying over negative emotions can be damaging to it (Howie, 2016). Teenagers with depression experience a general lowered mood. There are however, various factors that cause depression and varying symptoms, which uniquely impact the individual. A combination of medical and psychological treatments can be used to alleviate these symptoms. Physical activity is shown to have significant benefits on physical and mental health. It provides an immediate increase in mood directly after playing sport as a result of endorphins (a natural painkiller being released). Regular participation in exercise improves long-term mental health due to the release of serotonin in the brain and the redirection of negative thoughts, which relieves stress on the limbic system. Participation in exercise is encouraging due to the friendships that are developed and the valuable support system these provide. Regular exercise increases positive reinforcement formed through motivation and a sense of control over improvement and accomplishment of goals. These aspects of exercise can be used to a patient’s advantage when treating depression and can be integrated into positive healthy lifestyle, along with other treatments. It is important to remember to not exercise at a level that exceeds the skill and commitment level of the individual, otherwise negative outcomes might be observed.
