When assisting a service user with a task whether it be small or large we always need to carry out the task using the correct equipment, and the correct members of staff to be present. Also our full attention should be on the task at all times and aware of what the service user is doing and what is happening around them. if not doing so then this could result in the service user falling or being injured and equipment could be damaged. Carers should always carry out a visual check of the equipment prior to using and if a problem arises should not be used and reported to the relevant person.…

It is important that I work to the agreed scope of my role as it is part of the employment contract that I have signed. Also, I should only do tasks that are agreed in the contract and that I am trained and qualified to perform or do it. For example, if I were asked to change a catheter bag and that I have not been trained to do it, it may cause harm to my service user and that I would be accountable for this, not just my employer. I SHOULD never do any task that I have no experience or training in as that task…

My job role and responsibilities as a care assistant include many different role’s. I will compile these into a typical morning shift at work. At the start of the day we all have a handover report, then before we start breakfast feeds we must always wash our hands and put on the feeding apron to prevent germs getting transferred into the food and into the kitchen. We start on a feeding list crossing every one off individually to make sure everyone has been done. We make sure the client to be fed is sat up well in bed to prevent choking, after everyone has been marked off on the list we change our aprons to blue for caring and make sure we wash our hands before starting.…

    1. As a carer your role is not to do things for the individuals you care for but to do the tasks including the service user. A support workers role is to work in partnership with the individual and support their decisions, offer as much or as little assistance the service user requires for their care and support them to do as much as possible for themselves. If you provide too much care for an individual they can lose their skills and independence and not learn any new life skills. By providing support and encouraging the individual to participate in their daily living needs you are helping them to develop and maintain their skills for everyday life. Skills are easily regained if the service user is shown how to complete a task. For example if a service user is having a shower and would usually have his hair washed for him, why not show him how to wash his own hair. Whilst providing personal care for my residents when it comes to hair washing, I normally provide the shampoo and apply the shampoo to the service users palm. I then mimmick washing my own hair and ask the service user to copy me. This is also useful in showing a service user where needs to be washed. I also talk to the service user about the task they are doing, for example I would mimmick washing my arms and say wash your arms that's it, don't forget underneath your arm. This is enforcing new skills as well as maintaining them, it also empowers the service user as they have achieved this task themselves with minimal support.…

In my role, it is important that I can communicate in the correct way to ensure that the needs of the service user are understood and are dealt with correctly. Effective written and verbal communication and being able to use a variety of interpersonal techniques helps to promote strong working relationships and will promote good quality care for the service user. For example when I meet a service user on the initial visit we discuss their needs and wishes to ensure they receive the appropriate care and support package that is individually tailored to meet there needs. I hold regular review meetings with the service user, the key worker, family members and other professionals to establish any changing needs. I contact the service user regularly by telephone to ensure that everything is working well with the service. I also hold regular staff meetings and one to one meetings to ensure effective open communication between the office and the staff on duty. This enables staff to raise any concerns that they may have and for actions to be implemented to reduce or eliminate the concern. I produce reports, update…
