Objectives:
Describe the stages of sleep and associated Disorders.
Explain the treatment or interventions for these disorders.
Stages of sleep:
There are two types of sleep- Slow-wave sleep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep.
Slow Wave Sleep:- This sleep is exceedingly restful and is associated with decreases in both peripheral vascular tone and many other vegetative functions of the body. For instance there are 10-30 percent decreases in blood pressure, respiratory rate, and basal metabolic rate.
REM Sleep (Paradoxical sleep, Desynchronized sleep)
In a normal night of sleep, bouts of REM sleep lasting 5 to 30 minutes usually appear on the average every 90 minutes. When the person is extremely sleepy, each bout of REM sleep is short and may be very absent. As a person becomes more rested through the night, the durations of the REM bouts increase.
REM has several important characteristics:
1)Activated form of sleep usually associated with dreaming and active bodily muscle movements.
2) The person is more difficult to arouse by sensory stimuli than during deep slow wave sleep, and yet people usually awaken spontaneously in the morning during an episode of REM sleep.
3)Muscle tone throughout the body is exceedingly depressed, indicating strong …show more content…
Unpleasant sensations in the legs that are ameliorated by moving the legs occur when the patient is tired in the evenings and at the onset of sleep. This condition has a strong familial tendency and can present with daytime somnolence due to disturbed night time sleep. It needs to be distinguished from the daytime sense of restlessness of the limbs known as akathisia that is a side effect of major tranquillisers, and the related condition of periodic limb movements during sleep. Restless legs can be symptomatic of an underlying peripheral neuropathy or iron deficiency or other general medical conditions(
