Descriptive Essay: New York City

New York City is known as a center of art, culture, fashion and finance with iconic sites such as Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, and The Empire State Building. There are certain aspects which are easily identified with New York City such as skyscrapers, rap, the subway, and Broadway. However, in my mind, there is one aspect of New York City which I feel represents the city as a whole. One place that can be found in each neighborhood with different ambiences and different people. Diners are delightful environments and food joints serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Diners show the traits which make New York City so enjoyable for me. Across the street from my house there was a small, corner diner run by seven Latino men. It was called “The Imperial Coffee House.” It was no bigger than a subway car, and it included only four tables and a long bar with about 14 seats. The smell of the griddle and fresh coffee filled the Diner. From inside, you could hear and see all that was going on on the busy
Whenever I walked in, there were always at least five people eating at the bar and two waiting for food to go. The cooks never took a break; making eggs, pancakes, or turning the hash browns with their rustic steel turner. They were diligent, but at the same time, they were kind and conversational. However, in my neighborhood there had been many cases of stores and businesses that had been open since I was a toddler which were closing or were moribund. For example, the deli on my block which I would go to almost every day had closed, and it was a difficult loss as there was so much need for it. Most of them were closing because of acquisitive landlords raising the rent after the businesses’ lease had expired. During the summer of 2015, I had went over to The Coffee House for breakfast. However, I had no clue that that would be one of the most important breakfasts I would have at The Coffee
