I have heard many people around me saying that you should go walk the Brooklyn Bridge at least once and I never have a chance to fulfill it. Through this opportunity, I called my friend up to accompany me to walk the Bridge for the first time. Based on the information from the history of the United States, the Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883 and considered as an engineering marvel for that time. It remains as one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. During mid-1800s, the ferries connected Manhattan and Brooklyn. Ferries was a major convenience transportation for us, the people of that day were used to oars and sails to ride boats. These faster, more reliable ferries helped Brooklyn grow until the bridge was build. When…
The first time I attended Macy ‘s Herald Square on W 24th St I was a junior in high school. My fashion merchandising and management 1B class went there on a field trip to acquire some of their history and information on what it takes to run such a large retail store. When our tour guide was finished we had free time to explore the store. I remember wanting to shop but being too overwhelmed because I wasn’t looking for anything particular and couldn’t decide where to start or where to go. At the end of the day I didn’t purchase anything. Although I was amazed a retail store could be 3 acres, I realized that day I prefer smaller retail stores. I wasn’t back to Macy’s Herald Square until I began going to FIT in fall 2015. I went back with my…
When I moved to New York to live with my dad, my life and ethics took a major turn. Many things changed, from school, to sports, to even the way I dressed. The people are different, the culture is different, and the way people talked was even different. The reason these changes had to be made was because of the black population in Virginia, they were all very gangster, and the New York population were mainly white, not that I have a problem with blacks, but they were very rude and inconsiderate. I am not racist at all, just people there are ignorant. In Virginia where I used to live, it was considered the ghetto part of my town, so I had to look, and act the part. But in New York where I live now, it’s the total opposite, a much more civil and calm town. I had to make so many changes to my life to adjust to the way people live In New York compared to Virginia. Not only the people and the culture, but my family in New York has a completely different way of living, by that I mean how they look at things, what’s right and what’s wrong in their eyes (I moved from Virginia to New York in 2007, when I was around 12 years old, in 7th grade). After the move life went forward, I got better grades…
It was august 4th 2014 i went to bed at 8:00 that day “My’shea” i heard in a loud voice and it was my mother she had wake me up early. and when I woke up I made me some pancakes with my dad and my sisters, then I got cleaned up, then we went to holland michigan to get my aunt and husband and kids. We went to the airport in detroit michigan and we flu the rest of the to san diego. When we landed in san diego we saw a skyscraper and it was so big that we saw it from the airport, but next to the skyscraper was a place called a kids fun zone,…
In 2008, I moved to an apartment in Rockaway Park located in Far Rockaway. I’ll admit, the neighborhood was far from attractive when I first arrived. The rumor mills stirred up a storm suggesting that Far Rockaway was well… “Rough around the edges” for a lack of a better term. Working on Riker’s Island, most of our patients who reside in Queens often came from Far Rockaway, thereby confirming the rumors that the town was riddled with crime, infested with drugs and plagued with anything one might consider rebellious or unscrupulous were true. And on my first day, I got lost and winded up surrounded by… you guessed it, The Projects. That was enough to dither anyone from any potential Real Estate or, in my case, rental agreement – regardless how appealing the offer could be. So why did I agree to move there in spite of the distasteful first impression? Before I can answer that, allow me to dive into the demographic details and…
This summer I had the opportunity to visit New York City and was able to tour campus. As soon as I stepped foot on the grounds I felt at home. The quiet campus seemed like a great escape from the bustling city. All of the students I met seemed very welcoming and willing to help out new students. I've grown up in Oklahoma City and realize that moving to New York will be a big adjustment. Barnard provides the support I will need to become comfortable in this new environment. I also value how hard Barnard works to support all the women that attend. The opportunities and doors they have opened for all graduates is inspirational. I want to attend a college that is dedicated to their students. A college where women support each other instead of tearing…
Cleveland is home of the Cavaliers, Indians, and the Browns. July of 2017 is was able to take a trip to Cleveland, Ohio. The main reason we went was because it was a huge bowling tournament. I finished 911th out of 1418 kids in the u20 division. The drive was the best part of the whole trip though. It was really interesting to see how different places are and how different the country is in different states. Driving through Iowa was really strange. There was no hills at all. Driving through the different states was cool, there was no place that was the same. When we got to Cleveland there was so much to do that we never what to do. We went to dave and busters one day and played the games, it was really fun and interesting to see what different…
There was a time when we were in Alabama and we were planing a trip to Las Vegas, so we drove to Georgia, and we stayed for one night planning on taking a flight to Las Vegas the next day. My brother and I got to stay up late for some reason. The next day we flew to Las Vegas. The airport was super busy, so we went through security check point. Then we went to go get some food. We got tacos from this mexican restaurant. Then we went to go wait for our plane. While we were waiting we ate some tacos.…
During the summer before my sophomore year in high school my father had to relocate to Chicago for one year that gave us an opportunity to live there. We moved in August into a northern section of the city, Lincoln Park. Moving to Chicago was an exciting opportunity to live in a big city. Since I never lived in a big city, I was not really sure what to expect. The school where my brother and I were enrolled is Jones College Prep. In comparison to Lincoln Park, a residential area in the north section of Chicago, Jones College Prep was in the South Loop, a very busy downtown area of the City. Instead of mom driving us to school every day, we hopped on the Redline L-train and for 23 minutes each way travelled above and…
The day had finally come. Christmas break when my family would travel to Las Vegas/Phoenix Arizona.…
I saw New Orleans for the first time, on spring break with my mother, while visiting my aunt. I was excited to go because Lil Wayne, my favorite rapper, was from there. We stayed in the Lower Garden District, a very different place from Weezy’s Hollygrove. I learned how to navigate the French Quarter, captivated by the skinny colorful houses decorated with beads, the warm air in my face gave me a sense of well being. The vegetation is so lush in New Orleans and so different than my home in Brooklyn. I heard about Tulane on that trip and it has been my first choice ever since. It has become my refrain when anyone asks where I want to go to college.…
There is no specific standard for normal in Union Square. Walking around the area, you will see all kinds of people; some people will be battling their stress away in a chess match like, the two guys sitting by the edge of the street with a table and board set up blasting through each others defenses, others are rushing through all the traffic try to reach their destinations, and in the back ground you will see people sitting in all kinds of places, on the steps, ledges, even on the floor, and we can not forget about those playing Pokémon go. As New Yorkers, We see all these things going on around us but we never pay much mind to any of what we could noise of the city. However, today was different.…
Walking down the familiar streets of New York City I was in my own world. It was like I couldn’t hear or see anything else. I was paying just enough attention to where I was going so that I didn’t walk into something or get hit by a car. Once I stepped out into the street and a car honked and the driver yelled, “Watch it kid!” I stepped back out of the street and he continued driving still waving his arms and glaring at me.…
During my sophomore year of college, I led an alternative spring break trip to New Orleans for eight college students. One night, our group visited Audubon Park to explore. For safety reasons, I asked everyone to stay in groups. Immediately after I turned my back, one student, Conner, had darted out of sight and disappeared. I searched with the rest of the group and found him after thirty minutes. When we arrived back to the hostel, I asked to talk to him as coolly as I could compose myself, since I was still rattled. I simply asked him why he had walked off. He responded that he had wanted some alone time. We kept the conversation going and he eventually apologized. I realized that talking through a matter and listening to the other person…
Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA had its perks if you liked living in a crowded city with lots of commotion, its downfalls are the many criminal gang activity the streets of L.A are known to have. Growing up in a hostile environment everything I knew and was used to was the gang street life in L.A. Education did not become a priority the possibility of improvement for a better life never crossed my mind. I am the first generation child it was hard to adapt to the American way of living, despite been born here. I only gathered with Hispanic kids who were also the first generation of parents who came from Mexico, Salvador, Guatemala and other places in Latin America. I was never around other ethnicities, not white, Asian, black etc.…
