The horror genre is meant to bring out the worst in people. Each and every person has dark and evil thoughts that are not often seen during the day. However, the moment they begin watching a horror movie, those evil thoughts take over. It is a “peculiar sort of fun, indeed. The fun comes from seeing others menaced – sometimes killed” (King, 1). These sort of movies appeal to the side of people that is often tucked away. While I am driving down the highway and a person suddenly cuts me off and I have to slam on the breaks, I often think what would happen if I jumped out of my car and slammed…
Horror movies, like scary stories and thrilling amusement park rides, allow us to challenge our fears, to show that we are not afraid, to prove that we can. King proposes that these activities confirm for each of us our normality, while also appealing to the worst in all of us, as they allow the freeing of our fantasies without fear of reprisal or repercussion.…
When I walked into the movie theater, there were a good amount of people that came to see it. They all seemed to have a feeling of anticipation for this movie adaptation of the novel. I bet that most of the people that were in the theater the night that I went to watch it all read the book about, so they know what they are getting into and the book has been out for a while so needed to have established some sense of familiarity with the movie. I noticed a group of people that were commenting on how it would be a spectacular movie adaptation is going to be, they were in for a special treat. I went to see this movie with my girlfriend, since she is an action movie sci-fi buff, she was very respectful and let me analyze and critique this movie for this essay. I went to Gateway during the middle of the week on a day I didn’t have homework, I made it into a date night. It wasn’t opening night, since I didn’t realize this movie was assigned until later in the week. The mood of the crowd was full of anticipation and then regret at the end of the movie. I fitted in with the crowd since I knew the plot behind this movie. I was comfortable with the whole production since I was ready for whatever this movie was going to throw at me.…

As I walked closer to the entrance, my heart began pounding harder and harder. I could feel the sweat in my hands, as the time closer. Walking into the first room, I was grabbing my dad’s hand. I could feel my hands sweating almost like Niagara Falls. I tried to keep my eyes closed, but it would just make it worst. I slowly began to open them, and the creepy actors were everywhere. They yelled, and ran, all over the place. My fear just got worst.…
Immediately upon walking through the elegant double doors, the sweet aroma of butter envelopes the air around me causing me to rapidly salivate. The smell of nacho cheese accompanies the butter fragrance and I quickly begin to picture the many tasty treats behind the square concession area that is located in front of me. Candy galore is perfectly aligned behind the glass case further enticing my taste buds. A perfect temperature keeps me comfortable and makes me wish my home's temperature could be this perfect. One well groomed attendant generously overfills a striped bag with freshly popped popcorn and delicately hands it to a young boy standing next to his mother. Colorful posters line the walls around me, showing a glimpse into what lies behind the doors located down the hallways. The softness of the bench I am sitting on causes me to wonder if I am perched upon a cloud. Intermittent bursts of laughter can be heard coming from down the long hallways as well as in the lobby creating an atmosphere of endless fun. Smiling faces of children, teenagers, and adults quickly pass by me and I can hear the attendant quickly tear their perforated tickets as he happily says, "To the left, third door on your right."…

The theatre is surrounded by classic eateries, restaurants, shops and galleries which make the visit complete. When in the theatre, there are various servings of snacks from popcorn to soda depending on personal preferences and pocket. In this visit, we seat at the back on the suggestion of my friend because he is short and hates craning his neck. We were not very lucky because the movie showing had already started and was almost through.…
In the chapter 15 as we call Sister Flowers from How the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, allows us the readers to experience the day with Margareute Johnson through her writing style as if we were experiencing it through her eyes and deep inside her thoughts. Her use of imagery, metaphors, similes and narration helps us paint and imagine a vivid picture in our own minds. Just like when Angelou is describing Sister Flowers, “Her skin was a rich black that would have peeled like a plum if snagged . . .” Her use of a simile comparing a plum helps us imagine the details such as being smooth, soft, and shiny, just as she saw Sister Flower’s dark black skin. Her use of imagery helps us experience things she saw, the smells she smelt, as if we were right there experiencing it with her. “The sweet scent of vanilla had met us as she opened the door.” As we read this we can in our heads invent in our minds how Sister Flowers house smelled like vanilla, as she was about to step into her house. Angelou gets us thinking that Sister Flowers had probably just got done baking. “They were flat round wagers, slightly browned on the edges and butter-yellow in the center.” Angelou already gave us her sense of smell, now she is using imagery to describe her sense of sight of the cookies that Sister Flowers just baked especially for Margareute. Now she is getting our mouths watering for some of Sister Flower’s cookies.…
While waiting in line for the midnight premiere of the newest horror flick, we have adrenaline running through our bodies watching the previews and seeing the lights dim. At last it is completely dark. Creepy music makes its way into the theater; we can feel the anticipation in the air. Our palms begin to sweat, our hearts are racing, and our minds are questioning “what’s going to happen next?”. Finally we are being shown what is behind the door, we see the monster for the first time, as we peak through our fingers. As scared as we are we keep watching. Once it is over we remind our self that it was “just a movie” and is not real. But if it is not real, then why are we so scared, and why do we watch it?…

For example, the film’s soundtrack jarringly leaps from quiet Scandinavian opera to the blasting music of a violent rave in the museum. This drastic change in volume causes the audience to jump and cringe, similar to the reaction of people to the museum’s tasteless YouTube advertisement of a young girl being blown to pieces while standing in “The Square”. By resorting to this technique of shock, Östlund demonstrates, in a rather tongue-in-cheek manner, that not even his film is immune to the opportunity for immediate reaction created by egregious scenes and sounds. Similarly, silence and cacophony are juxtaposed in the “ape-man” scene as the performance actor shrieks like a monkey at full volume to a fearfully silent audience. The grating difference in noise increases the discomfort of the guests who try to ignore the ferocious display which, in an attempt to push boundaries, has clearly gone too far. Östlund also plays with sound to create moments of comic relief and to display awkwardness. In an argument between Christian and Anne, a sculpture of a pile of chairs rhythmically produces industrial sounds as if it’s being pushed to collapse. This environmental sound humorously punctuates the awkward silences in the argument such as when…
Since I was a child I was taken to the movie theater for fun. Because of all my experiences at the movie theater I have very high expectations for it and the movies that I go watch. The customers experience has a big impact on whether or not they will come back. Were the people nice? Was their popcorn good? Were their prices expensive? One of the biggest things customers complain about is if the movie does not live up to its previews. This is something you can hear instantly when the credits begin and the lights turn on. My recent experience to see The Purge lived up to these expectations, the service and food were excellent, the movie was engaging, and it lived up to its previews perfectly.…
