You Don't Need A Gun To Be A Hero
When you think of war, you most likley think of guns, gory combat, and murder. However, we all recognize our soldiers as heroes, people to look up too, rolemodels. When we think of a war hero, we think of what they did in the war, most likley saving, and killing many people. Wars are all about violence, so it would be safe to assume that in order to recieve a metal or be a hero, you would need to fight in battles for your honor, killing many. One man proved everyone wrong.
Desmond Doss was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on February 2, 1919, to his parents William Thomas Doss (he went by Tom), and Bertha Doss. His mother raised him as a Seventh Day Adventist, and taught him to always respect the Sabbith, to never be violent, and to eat a vegetarian diet. His father, however, was always drunk, and abusive. Training was not easy for Desmond, because he was much thinner than most of the soldiers. Even though he was thinner, and had a disadvantage in strength, he was incredibly fast, winning the obsticle course that they had to run. Things were going well for Desmond, until they brought out the guns. Everyone was told to grab a gun, so everyone did. Except for Doss. Doss wanted to be a medic, so he could save lives instead of take them. The High Ranks yelled at Desmond, telling him to grab his gun, but Doss was a conscious objector, and he refused to hold a rifle. This ended up being awful for him, because now, the High Ranks tried to get him to leave. He still stood strong in his faith, knowing that he didn't need to take lives to be a hero, he wanted to save
