Most people look up to NFL players like they’re some sort of superhuman beings , but the reality is they are just regular people like everyone else that plays a sport that is just a profession. But that’s not what this is about. This is about how NFL players get away with crimes like they’re untouchable and the Nation Football League does nothing about it, but in the court system if a NFL player gets a domestic violence charge then they have it easier to have little to no punishment, but a regular person in the court system would be punished harshly for a domestic violence charge while serving more time than an NFL player, there is an inequality when it comes to the court system. Even though most people think NFL athletes should just get standard to no punishment for domestic violence, NFL players should get a harsh punishment because they repeat domestic violence offenses, there is an unequality when it comes to the domestic violence charge because NFL players are getting off way too easy.
The NFL should punish players more harshly because they repeat the domestic violence charge again. When it comes to crimes …show more content…
happening over and over again recidivism is one of the common things talked about when a crime happens. Recidivism is when a person commits a crime and it keeps on happening like a bad habit. Recidivism happens in the NFL because the players have a ton of money and they feel like they can’t be touched by none of the court systems. It’s even worse when the NFL has to emphasize domestic violence on commercials and while they’re trying to emphasize to reducing and stopping domestic violence in the NFL while players are supporting the cause and making these charges happen upon themselves. The NFL should be having stricter sentences so there wouldn’t be repeating offenders. In This graph it shows that NFL players have more assault charges against them than the U.S average. “An NFL player has a hi-gher chance of getting a domestic violence, assault or battery charge”. Recidivism isn’t something that just happens in society it happens in the NFL too. There are a few NFL players in the league that have repeated a domestic violence charge more than once.
NFL player Ray McDonald committed his first domestic violence crime in the NFL as a San Francisco 49’ers. “Ray McDonald assaulted a woman with a child and his driver( who was there at the time the crime was going down) and tried to stop Ray McDonald from committing the crime”. The crime was happening in Santa Clara, California. This was Ray McDonald’s first offense at a domestic violence charge and was just released from his team and was not suspended from the NFL(Orr). This shows that the NFL didn’t Ray McDonald he just went to another team to play for them. The NFL’s commissioner Roger Goodell looked into the case but yet then decided that the court system should just at least handle it. Even though the NFL has said that they were going to emphasize the domestic violence policy even more it seems like they haven’t done a thing.
NFL player Ray McDonald was charged yet again with a domestic violence charge again. When he committed his second charge he was released by the Chicago Bears after signing a one year contract with them but it was no guaranteed money. Ray McDonald one month later signed with the Oakland Raiders and played a full season while a verdict hasn’t been reached. This proves that the NFL barely punishes NFL players. There will always be an unfair advantage NFL players have when they commit crimes that go against their NFL contracts (Orr).
There is always an inequality when it comes to domestic violence charges in the NFL. Most players in the NFL have been getting their charges dropped or suspended until further notice. But even then committing a crime while being a player in the NFL still is violating your contract. The NFL has also expressed domestic violence in the NFL combine. “The NFL combine is just now emphasizing domestic violence in NFL and told a highly and most likely a first round draft pick that he couldn’t participate in combine”, but Titan’s quarterback Zach Mettenberger joined the NFL and went to the draft with that same charge. This draft prospect was a future NFL star but can’t participate in the NFL Combine because of a domestic violence charge (Goodbread). This will definitely hurt the prospects chance of getting drafted in the first round, or getting drafted at all. But the main problem is that the NFL is trying to stop this problem from even happening with the players. But yet they’re letting a kid who committed a crime get drafted possibly by an NFL organization. This shows the inequality in the NFL that players with a domestic violence charge get off way too easy.
Greg Hardy, a stud, a beast, a NFl superstar was charged with assault on his ex-girlfriend Nicole Holders. She fled the house with bruises all over her shoulder and went straight to the police. The police took the evidence pictures right then and there. The ex-Panthers player and current cowboys player was filed with a domestic violence charge against him. But the thing is even with the evidence the NFL found out about this firs, he still didn’t get kicked off the team or anything (Think Progress RSS). All Greg Hardy got was a 10 game suspension (NFL Arrest-Database). Greg Hardy’s case was dropped after the victim “declined to cooperate with authorities during the court appeal.” The NFL still didn’t do anything while Greg Hardy was posting online talking trash about his current situation or while he was fighting with teammates and yelling at coaches.
Daryl Washington, an Arizona Cardinal player assaulted his girlfriend which led to a domestic violence charge. Daryl Washington is an NFL linebacker. Linebackers are one of the biggest most built guys on the football field; Washington choked his girlfriend to the ground in a parking lot. Even though he pleaded “guilty to this charge” the NFL only suspended him for a certain amount of time (NFL Arrest-Database). He also just got a simple year of probation and a basic He isn’t playing on the Cardinal’s football team anymore, but that’s to his own personal problems. He is still trying to get back into the NFL. While a normal person would just get a harsher punishment if they were to commit a domestic violence charge on a person.
NFL players should be charged more because a normal person with a domestic violence charge gets punished more while an NFL player barely gets punished by the court system (NFL Arrest-Database). It’s like an imaginary wall between society and the NFL that separates players from regular people. Most players in the National Football League gets off easy. But a domestic violence charge can either be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony based on the damage of the victim. Even though most of the damage of that victim is a felony rather than a misdemeanor they still get off easy because of their money which can bail a player out of trouble easily. NFL players most of the superstars get paid millions while the other players get paid thousands, but even that’s enough to make bail and bail them out of most problems. NFL barely does anything , if a player gets kicked out of the NFL then they can still come back through reinstatement to get back, the NFL all they do is suspend a player but all society does is just send the player into a rehab program or relationship class.
Junior Galette a New Orleans player was filed with a domestic violence charge. He got this charge by beating on a woman that was living with him for years. The woman was injured but she also revealed in the court that she was going through this type of assault with him for a long period of time of three years. “ He is a manipulative predator” Raspanti the victim’s attorney said about Junior Galette (Triplette). Even though all the charges were dropped because it was considered a misdemeanor Junior Galette faced only a two game suspension. Even if Junior Galette was to get into trouble the NFL’s commissioner Roger Goodell always looks into NFL players charges and contract rules, but NFL players still get little to no punishment in the NFL.
Dez Bryant a star wide receiver of the Dallas Cowboys was charged with a domestic violence case, but this case was a crazy one. Dez Bryant was arrested then released on domestic violence charges on beating his mother. Dez Bryant was let go on even when he turned himself in and he was released on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence on his mother (NFL Arrest-Database). Even when the court had a video of evidence he was only under probation under a year while his mother talked to the Cowboys organization but the organization looked into it and yet the NFL did nothing about this situation. Dez Bryant didn’t get no suspension he didn’t get no help or anything. He still is that hot head wide receiver that everyone likes.
This seems convincing at first but most NFL players get off easy because they have the money to do so.
NFL players also get off easy because of the NFL programs they have made for domestic violence. They also have made shelters for men and women who can go through therapy with that person who committed the domestic violence crime. But at the same time while normal people go through these programs rather than NFL players recidivism can keep on happening. Also NFL players in the NFL thinks that the domestic violence programs don’t work out for them. It’s like the league is sending their players to the program and it portrays players as a “bad person”
(Kogod).
Most people would want to see their favorite player in the NFL having successful careers. People also don’t want to see their favorite players have a bad reputation or a bad name. People idolize these NFL players and want to grow up and be like them or play football like them. Most people look at these NFL players like they’re superhuman or something. But superhuman or not NFL players commit these domestic violence crimes and do no time that they have to pay for.
The NFL should also be giving out lesser punishments to the NFL players because of their agents and attorneys. Even though majority of people in this world doesn’t have an agent, nearly almost every NFL player has an agent to where they can get a good attorney to help them in the court system. But that’s where the inequality comes in. An NFL player that almost everyone knows and likes versus a person who isn’t an athlete and doesn’t have any records and isn’t an athlete.
In conclusion NFL player should get
A harsh punishment when it comes to committing a domestic violence crime because of recidivism and inequality in the court system. There are players in the NFL that have repeated a domestic violence charge twice and haven’t been kicked out of the NFL yet. There are superstars in the NFL that haven’t been suspended or talked to at all about this offense that violates their contract. This is important in the NFL and out in society because people in society looks up to these NFL players and want to follow in their footsteps, but these NFL players are committing crimes while the NFL is trying to prevent these crimes from being committed.
