These projects would be run by adults. A committee would select individuals from the community who are in need. Whether these individuals are parents living in an unfit home to raise children, or an elderly women living in a home that is falling down, the committee will decide the best plan for them. Depending on the situation, the project will both stabilize a home and fix it to where it is safe to live in, or if the home is too bad to salvage, a new home will be built for the individual. Students will learn how to do basic plumbing and electrical work, as well as roof work and other skills. Other valuable life skills to be learned would be installation of carpet and other types of flooring. Additionally, volunteers would be able to learn how to install light fixtures, kitchen appliances, and paint walls.
These projects will also give the students an opportunity give back to their community and have something that they can take pride in. Additionally, service-learning projects will look good on a college application, which is something important to high-school age students.
