“Studying one’s own teaching, adding to one’s selection and focusing on student learning helps teachers adjust and continue to find value in their teaching, thus potentially avoiding the burn out that affects so many teachers, who can be easily drained by meeting constant challenges, can become bored by teaching the same course the same way, or can become frustrated and fed-up by receiving “failing” evaluations from students” (Maryellen ,1990).Thus, effective teachers are those teachers who tend to show certain characteristics and do the right thing whereas ineffective teachers are those who are repeatedly makes mistakes and do wrong things over and over again. This essay shall discuss the principles and strategies that lead to effective teaching practices. The types of teaching strategies used in the classroom and their strength’s and weaknesses when implemented.
To begin with the first form of strategy that is used in the classroom to teach students is direct teaching .Direct teaching is where pupils learn best in the Zone of Proximal Development which means that the teacher needs to know pupils’ current level of understanding and their potential to learn – and tailor the teaching accordingly (Vygotsky).Here the activities are mostly teacher centered. The teacher gives lectures and demonstrates everything according to their knowledge and understanding. The teacher will ask questions to gain prior knowledge and current knowledge and base the teaching accordingly. Whatever the teacher thinks is correct will be elaborated in the class. The teacher spoon feeds all the information to the children. The teacher will write notes and explain the notes and the children will listen to her and after that children will be copying the notes from the board. These are simply chalk and talk method.
