Answer the questions and report your data in this fillable PDF using the observations and results you recorded in your lab manual while performing the experiments. Save the completed PDF file with your last name and lab number and submit the report as directed by your instructor. (For example: jones_lab2.pdf) Consider the Concepts
1. Explain, in one to two complete sentences, why a nonpolar substance does not mix well with a polar substance such as water.
Non polar substances do not mix well with water because they are hydrophobic and when poured in water they will not dissolve. Non polar compounds may stay on top of water without any movement and examples of this would be oil and fats.
Part 1: Making Slime
2. What kind of chemical bond formed between borate and the guar gum?
I would say a Covalent Bond because it deals with the polar and non-polar substances.
3. Describe the physical characteristics of the slime using one to two complete sentences.
The slime was yellowish, looked like Jello and had a thick like surface.
Part 2: Slime and Putty Ink Tests
4. Select all of the ink types that were attracted to the slime:
Newsprint
✔
Highlighter
✔
Roller ball pen
Sharpie permanent marker
✔
Dry-erase marker
5. Based on your results, select the description that you believe describes the slime you tested:
●
Polar
Nonpolar
6. Before testing the Silly Putty, you were instructed to write a hypothesis about the polarity of this substance. Considering the requirements for a scientific hypothesis, write your hypothesis as a complete sentence below:
I believed that the silly putty was non polar and I assumed that it would pick up the dry erase marker because this ink was insoluble and the slime didn't any effect on this material.
7. Select all of the ink types that were attracted to the Silly Putty:
Newsprint
✔
Highlighter
Roller ball pen
Sharpie permanent
