College Girl Disappointments Going to college is a monumental thing in every individual’s life. For females in particular they’re promised the man of their dreams that they will potentially spend the rest of their lives with. The thing that these girls aren’t told is that, the process of finding Mr. Right involves going through a few Mr. Wrongs first. The unfortunate thing is that no one informs the female about bouncing back from the experience with their Mr. Wrong. It’s a known fact that when women are hurt they have one of two options, either to get even or bottle up their feelings and subconsciously take them out on the next guy that pursues her. The most disappointing thing in all of this is that women are the one that get ridiculed for being cold and heartless towards the very men that broke their hearts. Now, everyone is familiar with the saying “hell hath no fury then a woman scorned” but who really knows what it means? It’s used to describe women who have been wrongly heartbroken by a careless man. It hasn’t always been a universal saying known to everyone; it originated from a tragedy play by William Congreve called The Mourning Bride. In this play the main characters, a man and women are caught up in complicated love that ends in murders as well as the female character committing suicide. The famous lines were, “heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned, nor hell a fury like a woman scorned” which later was shortened to the saying we love to use today. Just imagine your average teenage girl, bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to tackle the world. She’s been preached to all summer about what she’ll be faced with when entering her new life in college. As a side note her mom reminds her to always look her best and keep herself well groomed, because college is where she is supposed to find the man that she will grow old with. Taking these pointers and stories she

As said by Allen “Fashion is a part of society, whether it be good or bad.” Teens judge each other by whether or not their appearance revolves around or creates new fashion. If someone isn’t rocking the latest style, fashion’s hold on society deems them a loser. On the other hand, a new quiet kid in the high school cafeteria can instantly become “popular” simply by wearing the newest clothes or even unusual piercings. Unfortunately, the teenage mind undeniably judges their peers by appearance without any consideration of personality or any true values. Gosnell shows this in his film Never Been Kissed when 25 year old copy editor Josie Geller is sent back to high school to do an undercover piece on high school kids. On her first day of school, Josie’s outfit is chosen by her older friend Amanda whose knowledge of fashion stems…

One of the rules that campers often find hard to understand is no makeup and no technology. When some of the older girls tried to sneakily apply makeup, I explained that this rule de-emphasizes how you look in order to focus on inner beauty, so everyone can see each other without disguises or filters. For teenage girls, this is awkward because there is an expectation of flirting in coed situations which interferes with creating comfortable boy-girl friendships. Counselors are role models by agreeing not to date at camp, to keep the focus on group activities and developing platonic…

Lee described how her child grew up and “graduated” on time (par. 14). In her motherly aspect, this is positive; however, kids grow to be mature at different rates and the further mature kids do have an easier time succeeding in college. The mature college kids do not think of college as a time to beige drink, oversleep, or drive recklessly as individuals may label the college experience (par 10).…

As I began reading the short story of Senior Picture Day by Michele Serros, my expectations were low on excitement. I was expecting to read a rather bland story of how a young teenage girl had to conquer a million defeats in order to take the perfect senior picture. However, to my astonishment the short and sweet story pulled at my heartstrings. I could empathize with “Cal Girl” having endured a similar situation in my own teenage years. This story depicted only one small issue between friends yet, is able to articulate the feelings and everlasting concerns of body image and friendships women face during the adolescent years.…

Postmodernism is best understood by defining the modernist ethos it replaced - that of the avant-garde who were active from 1860s to the 1950s. The various artists in the modern period were driven by a radical and forward thinking approach, ideas of technological positivity, and grand narratives of Western domination and progress. The arrival of Neo-Dada and Pop art in post-war America marked the beginning of a reaction against this mindset that came to be known as postmodernism. The reaction took on multiple artistic forms for the next four decades, including Conceptual art, Minimalism, Video art, Performance art, and Installation art. These movements are diverse and disparate but connected by certain characteristics: ironical and playful…

I interviewed a girl that lives close to me. She explained her high school story to me, involving friends, family, peers, bullies, and boys. The interview was done as if it were only 2 people talking because I didn’t want her to feel any pressure. She explained what it was like going through puberty by herself, without the help of anyone. How the first two years of high school were and how she disliked it. How after she came back from her summer after sophomore year, she had no problems with anyone and explained how she had a boyfriend for a while. The girl I interviewed relates to plenty of topics that were discussed in the class like, self-esteem, peers, popularity, groups, bullies, family and sexuality.…

She thanks the instructor and walks to the advisement center to register for classes. As she waits to be called she feels her stomach growling. She barely noticed her hunger. She started imaging those tender, juicy chicken strips from Whataburger, with the salty fried fries, and the soft moist Texas toast with a nice cold Sprite. “Karla,” she snaps out of her world of food as soon as she hears her name and walks to the advisor’s office. The small office faintly smelled like the cologne her ex-boyfriend uses. She sat on a rough chair while the advisor registered her. After waiting a while, the advisor hands her a paper with the classes she’ll take and what time they start at. She walks out of the office feeling tired yet accomplished. She walks to the parking area where her family was waiting for her. She informs them that she was officially a college student and that she was very hungry. While the family heads to a fast food restaurant to celebrate, the young woman fills her mind of college thoughts. She feels excited to start something new and proud of taking another step into her…

Someone once told me that life is not always fair; that some days are better than others are. Men do not care for this rule and we want everyday to be great, perfect and full of joy; but deep down we know it cannot be. We refuse to accept the unfairness of life though; we resist in our own unique ways to every bad thing that happens in our lives. We have been known to resist violently, lashing out at others in rage; and we have been known to bear the pain ourselves without rage and violence. Either way we find a way to deal, but dealing is not our game in life; we would rather solve the problem than to risk defeat. However, there are times and situations that cannot be solved; that judgment and result are given in one sweeping blow that can knock the wind out of our self-esteem or knock us out completely. These types of problems cannot be avoided if a male wants to have a normal and productive life. It is a matter of our approach and our dealing with the result that will give us a learning tool for future problems. The problem I want to ad-dress is dealing with rejection by a woman in two different stages: pre-relationship and during the relation-ship.…
