Discrimination is the treating of a person, group or family less favourably because of their protected characteristic or because people ‘think’ a person or group may have a protected characteristic. A protected characteristic is a particular quality a person or group possesses which is recognised by law as needing to be protected.
There are many different types of discrimination which include:
• Direct discrimination - this is treating someone less favourably to their face or in a way that the person being discriminated against knows about it.
• Discrimination by association - this could be a family being discriminated against because they are related to a person with a bad history, for example someone saying, ‘Do not leave your bag near
