Discrimination In Hingham High School

I have been lucky to grow up in a town and high school where everyone is able to express themselves and be who they are without fear of discrimination. However, there have been times at my high school in which the inclusiveness and welcoming attitude among the student body has deviated. This fall, a group of freshmen used the n-word to insult students from our school’s METCO program. This incident has cast a shadow over many freshmen but in an effort to change the school climate afterwards, the student body has come together amazingly. We have aired announcements on our Friday Show combating racism in our school and the community of Hingham High School has shifted into an even more inclusive environment than we were before this alarming incident.
Well to me, an inclusive environment is one that accepts different races, religions, and sexual orientations but also challenges various political, moral, or ethical belief systems. To have an inclusive environment, everyone in a community must be able to have their own views on issues and should politely disagree with others in society. Everyone should be able to have unpopular opinions and express without fear of being discriminated against or hated. If there is only one way to operate and you force people to conform to societal norms, debate will never spark and change will never occur. Another attribute an accepting community possesses is a diverse population, not all of one gender, race, or religion. This allows everyone to learn and coexist with people who are not necessarily similar to them. A diverse community leads to an educated populous and an open-minded one as well.
