When talking about discrimination in this society, it is certainly not a taboo subject. Discrimination can happen anywhere, however, it is more likely to go unnoticed in the work area. For example, failure to hired or promote someone, because of their race, gender, religion, or background. In order to keep a positive workplace, laws were created to keep these things from happening. These laws fall under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, discrimination is a poison that still lingers around today.

social problem? Why is this topic being investigated? The problem is that people are constantly being denied jobs because of their race, gender, or religion. In order to find answers, researchers did a test called the methodology of field experiments. This test shows an approach to measuring and detecting the reasons for hiring discrimination (Pager, D., & Western, B. 2012).
For example, employers should not ask questions about an employee’s race or what he/she prefers. If the employer does this, and chooses not to hire that person, it will be classified as racial discrimination. Another example, a woman has put in an application for a job, which a man “normally” does. The employer chooses not to hire the woman and tries to explain to her that this job requires a little more “muscularity.” This discrimination is classified as sex or gender discrimination.
The Results.
After conducting two recent field experiments, researchers were able to find discrimination in low income areas (Pager, D., & Western, B.
2012). As described in the article, this experiment can provide multiple findings about discrimination: (1) it produces estimate rates of discrimination; (2) it yields evidence about the interactions that deals with discrimination; (3) it provides a vehicle for both research on and enforces antidiscrimination. A report by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that 99,412 workplace discrimination claims were filed in 2012. Race discrimination was cited in 33.7 percent of the cases, while 23 percent of claims were for age discrimination. These findings demonstrate that workplace discrimination is a reality for thousands of workers every year (Finn, L. …show more content…

Stopping Discrimination. Let’s be honest, discrimination will not disappear. However, there are many ways workplaces can keep a healthy environment. An employer should set rules and let their employees know that discrimination will not be tolerated. Employers should hold weekly classes about discrimination. If someone violates the rules, they should either be suspended, or fired.
The employer should lead by example and show their employees right from wrong. No one should be treated less or more than another person, show equality. I was a victim of discrimination, when I got my first job. The job did not work out, and I was cursed out for even trying to quit.
It’s really sad when someone, especially employers, say you shouldn’t be working in the first place.
I’ve been racial profiled my whole life. People think that since I’m Black/African-American, I do not know a lot, I didn’t finish school, or I shouldn’t get a job. I finished school in the top 10 and received plenty of awards. All types of discrimination needs to stop and prejudging people is pure ignorance. Just because someone looks stupid, does not mean that person is dumb. Never judge a book by its cover.
Conclusion
In order to keep discrimination out of the workplace, it is necessary to enforce the law on both the employer and employees. Everyone deserves equal rights. Even though some types of discrimination goes unnoticed, it should still be brought up and addresses. No employer should judge someone because of how they look, how their name is spelt, and how they sound when they speak. Women should not be denied equal rights, when it comes down to applying for the same job a man is trying to get.
In my opinion, discrimination can be prevented if people were not so judgmental. Working in a toxic environment, can cause problems. Bullying starts and it creates this horrible environment. Nobody should be forced to work in discrimination. Fact, you are practicing discrimination, the moment you start looking for
it.
