Theory of Addiction: Changing the Way We Look at Addiction When one thinks of addiction they often refer to the classic definition of addiction which implies that addiction is a brain disease, once one uses a substance the brain becomes compulsively addicted to it. However, Professor Bruce Alexander has done extensive research disproving the modern definition of addiction. According to Alexander, addiction is caused by dislocation. Alexander had noticed that the rats were in a cage alone and had nothing else besides the two bottles of liquid. Alexander built a new cage for the rats. Ones with an abundant source of the best rat food, activities for the rats to do, and put all the rats together in the cage. In this environment the rats would have all their needs met. Alexander again put the two bottles in the cage and observed. The results were somewhat shocking. Although all the rats tried the drugs because they did not know what was in each bottle, in this experiment not only did the rats use less the twenty-five percent of the amount the previous rats did, but also no rats used the drug to point of death.
