Discuss two strategies that enable a nurse on an interdisciplinary team to exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position.
There are many different ways that a nurse can play an important role on an interdisciplinary team without occupying a formal role. I feel that the role of a positive role model, and making a commitment to change to reach goals are very important. Being a positive person and role model is important in any job, in any field of work. Showing those around you that you are positive with change even in times of challenges will help them have a better and more positive outlook at their job. A negative person can be like a fire in the work area making those around them negative and creating a negative work environment. It just takes one negative attitude or person to take over a department, like it only takes one match to burn down a forest. In the nursing and health care field a positive attitude not only affects a person’s …show more content…
coworkers, but also affects the patients they are taking care of, and treating. A positive environment helps the patient have a faster and easier recovery time. Our goal is to help the patients that we are carrying for, and to help our coworkers to have a positive and pleasant work atmosphere. Making a commitment to change is not always easy. Change is a hard concept for almost everyone. When a person is dedicated to making to a commitment to change they lead the people around them and help them reach the goals that the group has set to make their job safer, and a better place for them and their coworkers. Commitment to change is not always a change that a person wants, but a change that would be for the benefit of the patient, and better and safer outcomes. A person always being committed to change will lead those around them by their example to adapt, and their ability to strive to make change. Both of these ways are ways that a leader can lead without holding a formal position and helping those around them accomplish the goals that they have set of making their work place a safer, and more efficient place for them to work and patients to heal.
Justify why it is important for a nurse to be actively involved with and interdisciplinary team. Discuss two ways a nurse can make an active, contributing position within an interdisciplinary team.
A nurse should play a very active role in the interdisciplinary team.
An important reason is that nurse is a primary caregiver for a patient. Many people make many contributions in the health and wellness and safety of the patient, but the nurse is hands on with those patients every day. The nurse knows what the patient’s needs, and what medications are, and are not available. The nurse knows the equipment that is being used on the patient, and what is and is not working. The nurse also sees what important jobs that each person of the team makes and how it’s helping or not helping the patient. The nurse is the one in the trenches day in and day out taking care of the patients, and are seeing the mistakes and positive outcomes that the health care teams are making. The nurse can be the eyes and ears for the patient and all the health care team. Playing an active role in with way as a primary nurse will better the goals, safety, and better outcomes for all those
involved.
The nurse is a like a glue that holds the team together and helps them work together. The role of making sure that all those on the team are being respected is a very important part of taking an active role. Every person on the team has a very important role of the interdisciplinary team. Without the help of every person on the team the team wouldn’t be very efficient. Making sure that everyone understands that roles that each and every person makes on the team helps those on the team respect everyone’s job and their contributions to the team. When people realize the roles that each other are playing helps them be more respectful to their fellow coworkers, and their opinions and goals that are being set.
Reflect how you would create a safe environment in a health care setting by applying the four characteristics of a culture of safety.
Creating a safe environment in a health care setting is very important for positive outcomes for patients. Safety should be the top concern not just for the patients, but for the staff. Error reporting is a very intricate part of this process. A health care team should have a proper method in place to report, fix, and make sure that errors are not repeated. There is and always will be mistakes and errors made. We are human and all make mistakes, but it’s what we do with the information about the mistakes, and the changes that can be made to make it a safer practice. The way that the health care team can adapt and change with this information is of the upmost importance.
Disclosure is also a very important part of the cultural safety. Talking to those on the team and those that have made the mistake is important to find out why and how it was made. It also lets and makes those around aware about what has happened, so that we can learn and adapt changes so that we can learn from others mistakes. The ability to talk and disclose the information will help those on the team and in the health care setting make the proper adjustments so that history is not repeated.
As a health care team they need to make sure that they work together as a team and communicate. Communication is a very intricate role in an interdisciplinary team. Keeping the lines of communication open with the team will help them be able to discuss and communicate concerns and problems. If the lines of communication are broken and they are not working as a team, then safety issues will be over looked and poor outcomes or even death could occur. Team work and communication will provide the team with the tools to make a culture of safety for all those involved.
One of the last ways to make a culture of safety is through patient safety education. Patient safety education is one concept that is sometimes over looked. As a health care team we sometimes worry so much about the safety concerns and needs for the health care team to do, that we forget about the patients educational needs about safety. Educating the patients about their safety and the reasons that certain safety rules are in place will help them better to understand why those rules are in place. This helps the patient understand that as a health care team our goal is to keep them safe and communicate with them how these safety rules will keep them safe. It will speed up their recovery and should help them not obtain any injures while in the hospital.
The purpose of the safety culture is to help the health care team and patients be safe, and have a safe environment for all of them to work together, and to obtain good outcomes for both the patient and the staff.
