For example at the heart of the cold war the F-8U craft was used in the Cuban Missile Crisis for reconnaissance. This craft was later used in the Gulf War and was tested in a 16-Foot Transonic Tunnel. The A-6 Intruder was used during the cold war by the US Navy and Marine Corps during Operation El Dorado Canyon and Operation Desert Storm. Many aircrafts were used during the cold war and were important to the American success during that era. The aircrafts covered a multitude of operations and jobs as well. Another technological advancement was the use and creation of wind tunnels. These tunnels were used to help advance the technology of American Aircraft. These tunnels helped to test wing sweep, boundary layer control, the transonic area rule, flight, and much more. These tunnels were located at Langley Research Center and were called Langley’s Wind Tunnels. Not only did these tunnels test the aircraft, but they helped develop and test new concepts that could be used and incorporated into more advanced aircrafts. They had over fifteen each testing different concepts of the aircrafts like flight, pressure, performance, heat, take off, landing, movement and much more. If these tunnels were not created aircrafts would not have been as advanced as they were during the Cold War era and today’s world.
Even if the cold war made advancements it had its downfalls, and one of those downfalls was the spread of diseases.
One of the main diseases that spread during the Cold War was the Polio Virus which started in 1956. This disease was a hard one to point out since most people did not have any symptoms, so it was hard to tell if you had it or not. Without knowing it spread easier and caused more people to be infected. It was spread through contact mainly through human fluid, only a few people had symptoms that included a fever, nausea, flu like symptoms, fatigue and pain. Some people even became paralyzed and about five to ten percent die when this disease got to the respiratory muscles. After the disease was known it opened roads between the two sides of the Cold War. American Albert Sabin and Russian Mikhail Chumakov worked together to create a vaccine that could help prevent more people from being infected. After the vaccine was created mass campaigns in many countries had people be vaccinated. The Cold War helps to explain why it is crucial to get the Polio Vaccine and thanks to the two people who created the vaccine less people are infected. This disease shaped the way we view medication and helped people to realize that it is best to get
vaccinated. The Cold War also involved fights and terrorism, but these fights were mainly out of fear or to prove who was more advanced. One of the fights began in June of 1950. This was also the first military action of the Cold War. The North Korean People’s Army invaded its Western Neighbor, and many Americans feared that this invasion was the first step in a communist campaign to take control of the world. It was deemed that nonintervention was not an option and Truman sent the American military into Korea. The war was dragged and brought to an end in 1953. Terrorism was another affect the Cold War had. During the Cold War during the 1960s and 1970s the Soviet Union created waves of political violence against the West. The Soviet sent out groups of people to terrorize Europe through bank robbery, kidnapping, and sabotage. They wanted to use these terror groups to break up NATO. Terrorism was born in Russia during the 19th century, but when Russia stopped sending terror groups, terrorism never stopped. It was mainly used to attack the ruling classes and to undermine its opponents, but since then it has spread and caused attacks on the Government of America or on places that are government run. All of these attacks however, make the American government and military to think of a solution and fight back to prevent another attack from happened.
The Cold War ended in in 1991, it lasted for about 44 years. During the Cold War many things happened. Some of those things were good and some of them were bad. The advancement in technology with the aircrafts was a good happening because it made better and stronger aircrafts along with the use of the Langley’s Wind Tunnels. The spread of the Polio Virus was not a good happening because it affected many people, but two people from the opposite sides came together and created a vaccine that been helping to prevent the spread. Lastly, the fighting and terrorism during the Cold War was horrible for both sides, but it caused more security within places and made people more aware of what is going on within the world. Overall, the cold war had technological advances, causes the spread of diseases, and caused fights and terrorism to break out.
