The Cold War emerged from WWII
because these two allies realized, “ their visions for the future of Europe and the world were incompatible”(826). Josef Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, wished to keep the eastern part of Europe as a communist area. He also wished to bring communism across the globe. America wanted to add democratic governments across the world. Harry S Truman, President of the United States, was very wary of Josef Stalin. Each of these countries, “remained convinced that its own economic and political systems were superior to the other’s(826). This initiated the beginning of a years long conflict called the Cold War. In 1946 a telegram was sent by a man named George Kennan warning the United States government the the Soviet Union, “was not so much a revolutionary regime as a totalitarian bureaucracy that was unable to accept the prospect of a peaceful existence with the United States”(827). He argued that the only way to fight this was to contain the Soviet Union's power. They believed that the way to contain their power was to stop the spread of Communism into other countries. This led to the creation of the Domino Theory, a theory that stated as communism spread to different countries, countries surrounding that country would also become communist. America committed to stopping the spread of Communism. World War II was the main reason that the Cold War started. Two of the biggest world powers, the Soviet Union and The United States of America, both fought for control on the world stage. America wanted to spread democracy throughout the world. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism. This lead to tension between the two countries. When these tensions finally broke, the Cold War began.
