different from each narrative, but the message and the life lessons from the stories are identical. One particular tale that is told from the Bible and the Qur’an is the story of Noah. The message of Noah’s tale that is from the Bible is similar to the version of Noah’s story from the Qur’an, and both Christians and Muslims can achieve the same life lesson from either story. The story of Noah from the Bible starts off with God watching world that he created full of people and figuring out that the people have become violent, evil, and corrupt. God sees that Noah is a righteous man that believes and fears God. God tells Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth” (New Living Translation, Gen. 7.13). Then he goes on to tell Noah that he needs to construct a boat with the dimensions that God told him. He instructed Noah to bring his wife, sons, the sons’ wives and pairs of every animal on the face of the Earth. When Noah finished constructing the Ark, he did what God had told him to do and boarded them on the Ark. Then God caused the rain to fall on the Earth for forty days and forty nights, causing all the animals and the corrupted people to be wiped off from the Earth. When the rain stopped, the Ark settled on the mountains of Ararat. Noah waited a few days before sending out a raven and a dove to see if the flood has dried up. The raven did not return to the Ark; however, the dove came back with no sigh of the water receding. Noah let the dove go check to see again if the water is drying up and it returned with an olive branch. This was a sign that the flood waters were diminishing. When the floodwaters were all dried up after twelve and a half months, everyone left the Ark. They were told by God to be fruitful and multiply on the Earth. They were given guidelines to live by so that people could stop killing each other. God also promised that he will never again destroy the Earth with a flood and the symbol that he used to make this covenant was the rainbow. Whenever God sees the rainbow, he will be reminded of the covenant that he made with Noah and his sons. He will not flood the Earth even if the human race was bent toward evil again. The story of Noah from the Qur’an starts off with Noah warning the people to worship God or else there would be punishment approaching their way. Noah was recited saying, “O my people! Worship God! You have no other god other than Him. Truly I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day” (Qur’an, The Heights, 7:59). The people of that time period replied back, saying that Noah was wrong and they ridiculed him. Noah went to work to build The Ark that he was commanded to construct. The Ark was assembled from a tree that grew for forty years and was cut down by Noah so that he could use the wood to create the Ark. When he was forming the Ark, the people from his village still mocked him for what he had told them. They also criticized and questioned the need of a boat in the middle of a desert. When he finished building the Ark, pairs of every animal, his family, and the few that believed in God were allowed to get into the Ark. It was said that there were between eight and eighty people that were on the Ark, but no one knows for sure how many were aboard. One of Noah’s sons was not a believer of God and Noah tried to convince him to climb onto the Ark. The son refused to join them and decided to take shelter on the mountain, but he was also wiped away from the flood. The water swallowed up the Earth and the flood killed many animals, people, and plants. When the flood started to calm down and the Ark settled on Mount Judi, Noah sent out a raven to have it check to see if the water was drying up. The raven did not return because it found a corpse to feed on. Noah then sent out a dove a couple of times. When the dove returned with an olive branch, he knew that the flood was all gone. Noah then prayed to God to ask why his son was killed. This is because Noah was instructed to take his family with him and this puzzled him that one of his family members was executed by the flood. God replied back by saying that he was not part of his family if he was a non-believer. The people and the animals left the Ark and they all became fruitful and multiplied onto the Earth. Reading Noah’s story from the Bible and Qur’an shows the readers that are many similarities that come up between them. They both start off with a world that has turned wicked. God in both of the texts tells Noah to construct an Ark and to make sure a pair of every animal and his family is on the Ark. When the Ark was completed and all the creatures and his family were inside, the rain came for many days. In both texts, they described that the flood covered over the highest mountains and wiping out all of civilization and all of the creatures that roamed the Earth. When the rain stopped and the flood started to dry up, Noah from the Bible and the Qur’an waited patiently in the Ark, until his boat was placed on a mountain side and he was commanded to come out of the vessel. When that happened, God from the Bible and the Qur’an told them to reproduce onto the Earth. These are two stories of Noah are analogous to each other, which means that the messages that are learned from them are similar as well.
When Christians read Noah and the journey that he had to face in the Bible, they become aware of the message that it is trying to give.
This message is that God is faithful to those that believe and worship him. The people that were explained in the Bible during Noah’s time were wicked, murdering each other, and worshiping false idols. It was just a wave of evil that flooded the entire Earth. Noah was the only follower of God during his generation. He was also obedient, patient, and consistent. All these traits that Noah had have been difficult to have for a long-term commitment, but he showed them in the Bible. The Bible says “Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on the earth at that time, and he walked in close fellowship with God” (New Living Translation, Gen. 6.11). When God told him to build the Ark, he showed the readers that he was compliant and consistent. He also showed that he was patient when he had to wait in the Ark for twelve and a half months. Noah believed, was loyal to God, and followed all of God’s instructions. This caused God to be faithful to him as well and that is why he and his family were spared from the punishment that God gave to all of the others on the
Earth. Muslims obtain a similar message in the Quranic version of Noah, just like Noah from the Bible. The Qur’an continually repeats the scene of Noah trying to convince the other citizens to worship God only and be faithful to him so that he will show his love and mercy. Noah in the Qur’an showed related traits of what he displayed from the version of the Bible. He was obedient and compliant when he was trying to tell the others what to do and also when he was building the Ark. In the Qur’an, it says “Indeed, We sent Noah unto his people, ‘Truly I am onto you a clear warner, that you might worship none but God. Truly I fear for you the punishment of a painful day’” (Qur’an, Hûd 11:25-26). He also showed his patient side, when he was waiting for the tree to fully grow and when he was waiting for the flood water to shrink down. These traits that he showed in his story proved to readers that he was loyal to God. Noah’s faithfulness to God saved him, most of his family, and the animals from God’s wrath. Those that were not faithful to God like one of Noah’s sons, were killed by the flood that God descended upon them. In both the Qur’an and the Bible, the take home message that Christians and Muslims learn about in the story of Noah is that they should have faithfulness toward God. This is because he will guide his followers on the right path and will show his tenderness and kindness to those that believe in him. This message of being faithful is repeated numerous amounts of times with other prophets of the Bible and the Qur’an. The stories of Abraham and Moses relate to how putting faith and trust in God will make a significant and life changing impact on a person. In Abraham’s story, God called him to leave his comfortable life so that God could make him into a great nation. Abraham believed in God and did as he was told and soon after that he had a successful life. In Moses’ story, he was a quiet and shy man, but had much faith in God. With his faith, God made him into a leader that lead God’s people out of Egypt and to the Promise Land. Noah, Abraham, and Moses all put their trust in God and it greatly impacted their lives. If the Christians and Muslims that live in today’s society put as much faith in God just like the prophets did, their lives would be positively impacted. To summarize, Noah’s journey that was described from the Bible and the Qur’an were identical. Another idea is that the two text religions texts share similar messages that both Christians and Muslims can recognize and relate into their lives. Both the Quranic and Biblical versions of Noah discuss about the construction of the Ark, the pairs of animals and the family that went into the Ark, the destruction of the flood on the people and the animals, and the Ark being placed on a mountain after the flood. Noah’s traits of being obedient, consistent, and having patience proved to God that he was faithful to him. The message that Christians and Muslims should take away from this story is that being faithful to God could change a person’s life completely. The message about being faithful are also used in other prophets’ stories such as the story of Abraham and Moses. In the end, trusting in God will have a significant impact on a person’s life. God will show them his love, mercy, and will guide them on the right path if a person believes in him. This path that they take will end up getting them to have a closer relationship to God.
