After rewatching the film Her, written and directed by Spike Jonze, I realized that I had never watched a movie so intimately and actively involved in the layering of subtext. Her is an examination of the unconscious feelings that humans feel as well as the struggle to understand those feelings. At first glance, Her may seem like a simple story of tough love between an operating system and a man, but what exists in the subtext is something far more poignant. Jonze uses the power of subtext to make the audience understand underlying desires of the character of Theodore. We follow the character of Theodore on a journey in which he searches for real emotion, except Theodore cannot handle real emotions. Spike Jonze’s screenplay, along with his…

The mise en scene elements implemented into Run Lola Run are universal and have been used by big name Hollywood directors. An example of such is ‘Vertigo’ directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1958. Tom Tykwer was a fan of Hitchcock and was familiar with his work. He decided to administer two (2) of his ideas. Similar to Vertigo, there was a significant reference to spirals. For example, in Run Lola Run, the ‘spiralé’ café located behind Manni’s phone box can be seen in all three (3) scenarios. As well as the café, Tykwer had also re-invigorated the spiral staircase in the animation sequence at the beginning of every scene, which had been taken directly out of Vertigo.…

She is often taunted and bullied in the streets by thugs and then gets home to be treated as sub-human. But she has conditioned herself to be dehumanized. As much as she is determined to get out and move forward, her mother is equally determined to keep her down. After all, if she allows Precious to leave, her welfare checks will stop. She is not interested in moving from the front of the television set. As far as Mary’s concerned, Precious is not human and she definitely does not see her as her daughter. She’s only good for the role of her domestic. Precious expects to hear insults slurred at her, she expects to have trash hurled at her or dumped on her by her mother, Mary and the rest of the world. She accepts it all with numbness and nonchalance. The film adopts the personality of the protagonist who narrates the story and allows us to glimpse into her coping mechanism of wishful escape fantasies. Deep at the heart of “Precious” lies a truly poignant and inspirational story, which is no doubt, handled with great care and sincerity. “Precious” could easily be overstated, sentimental or rife with clichés, but rather it is loaded with surprises that invoke gasps of horror at times and tears of joy at other times. She is ashamed, humiliated and disgusted at herself but she escapes into her fantasy dream world where we hear voiceovers and flashing lights as everyone clamors for a glimpse of her on the red carpet, where her gorgeous Romeo awaits her with open…

In his memoir “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running,” Haruki Murakami details his life as a runner. Sure he also ventures into his life as a club owner and his evolution as a writer but foremost it’s a book about running. Even though it’s the first running book I read, all these years later I still consider it my favorite. When I revisited Murakami’s book for the first time in a decade, I wondered if my impression would change. After all, I read countless other running books, finished dozens of races and logged thousands of miles over those years.…
