Distracted Drivers!

Who here has been involved in a car accident? Did you know that in 2012, 3,328 people were killed in distraction-related crashes and about 421,000 people were injured in crashes involving a distracted driver? I myself, didn’t know about these shocking statistics. Nothing grinds my gears more than drivers who unintentionally put themselves and others in danger when it can be avoided. So today, I hope to inform you about my pet peeve on distracted drivers.!

Nothing is more inconsiderate than distracted drivers.!
A. Drivers who use their cellphone while driving put themselves in danger as well as the other drivers around them!
1. Drivers should not talk on the phone while driving in the car.!
2. Using Navigation on your cell phone is not safe to use while driving. !
3. It’s especially dangerous when the driver is texting while driving.!
B. Drivers who use their vanity mirror for grooming while driving are at a greater risk of getting into a car accident.!
1. Putting on makeup while driving is hazardous.!
2. Eating while driving is one thing, checking for food in your teeth after eating is another thing.!
C. Which leads me to my experience that I encountered last Friday driving home from school.! 1. While driving home the other day I almost got into a car accident because of a distracted driver. !

As you have heard, distracted drivers are my biggest peeve because they put themselves in danger and everybody else. If you take anything away from this speech let it be this. I know we get sick and tired of parents and commercials saying don't text and drive and keep your eyes on the road but were not invincible even though we all like to think we are. I will leave you all with this, I know it can be hard to not use your phone or groom

    Driver distraction can be defined as a diversion of the mental attention away from activities or skills needed for safe driving and completion of the activity. A distraction is a fact of having a person’s concentration disturbed by any external or internal stimuli.     Cellular devices have become a natural part of everyday life. People wake up check their texts, emails, Facebook, twitter and even the weather with the touch of a button. New generation smartphones are now constantly glued to every hand or head that passes by. The result of this obsession is the ongoing issue of distracted driving. This issue started when drivers would get constant phone calls while on the road causing them to lose focus on their surroundings. Now texting, emailing, messaging and status updating has added a new concern to the issue. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2008, driver distraction was the cause of 16 percent of all fatal crashes resulting in 5,800 deaths and 21 percent of all crashes resulting in an injury causing 515,000 wounded people. (Brian 2).Distracted driving has become a huge issue not only nationwide but specifically in Knoxville, Tennessee alone. Motor vehicle accidents and deaths have been increasing in the city over the years as cell phones have become more popular. Personally, I believe distracted driving is wrong. Staying focused on the road at all times is a sure way to save thousands of lives now and in the future. There need to be stricter penalties to support the laws that are currently in place.…

    Virtually anyone who has a driver’s license has been introduced to the idea that distracted driving causes accidents. However, the consequences of distracted driving are far more than just predictable and often taken lightly. Predictable events can be avoided. Since these are predictable events they are preventable.
