Distracted Driving: The Leading Cause Of Accidents
Distracted driving is the leading cause of crashes and deaths for teenagers. 17 deaths from distracted driving in 2013, I am guessing that number has increased as cell phones have become more accessible. Teenagers have a hard time with distractions: friends, music, cellphones, reaching for something, not paying attention because of the stresses of life.
I was also impressed with the statistic of speeds too fast, and it doesn't have to be in the 100's only near 10 over. It was in the top five in every category which makes it one of the most dangerous laws to break. It seems like we are always in a hurry to get places and if we will just take time to slow down and pay attention we will make the roads so much safer. Most accidents occur going

Now that we are in the future with more and more people buying vehicles, it’s no wonder it’s a challenge just to drop the kids off at school. I mean ok, most people say avoid traffic and leave early. Anybody else out there ever hear of that saying? Guess what? So have the rest of those snail moving people out there. The major problem lies not because of so many people, but the select few that fear the speed limit. Oh yes, I know you have seen it every day. Maybe you are the one reading this. But is it really that hard to go the speed limit or at LEAST mind your damn business. Minding your own business is the other problem. People can’t seem to figure out traffic build up is also caused by rubber neckers. You know when you see the bright blue and red from the fuzz on the right side of the road. I mean come on, the person pulled over is already embarrassed enough. They don’t need you eyeballing them up and down while you pass. I’m sure that person passed you up going 80 mph 10 minutes ago, only because you were going 60 in a 65 mph.…

As for myself, I don’t think it is enough to change or lift the U.S speed limits because I believe that speed does kill, Americans are not properly educated and trained, and everyday driving should not be viewed as “fun”. Driving is very serious because it can result in deaths. While the United States already deals with many speed related fatalities every day, I don’t think that getting rid of our speed limits or raising it to a higher speed will lower the rates of car accidents/deaths. Although the “stringent safety requirements imposed by the Department of Transportation for vehicles sold in the United States ensure that our cars and trucks are the safest in the world” (Knutson 621) It does not mean that the person getting behind the wheel is the safest person, and for that reason we have speed limits to protect our lives the best way it possibly…

In the statistics I read, I found that in every category there was “speeding too fast”. Obviously that is a problem in Utah. In my experience with drivers, I have noticed that many people speed and don’t even realize that they are doing so. I think that speeding is a problem because so many people die from it. On the page it stated that “15.2%” of people die from speeding and that “14.7%” of teens die from speeding. I will admit that it is shocking that those percentages are so high. I didn’t expect that many deaths from just going to fast in a car. It has brought new light into my mind that people need to be more aware of how fast they go.…

This article is another informative work on the dangers on distracted driving. This article, however, includes distractions from hands-free devices that allow one to have a phone conversation without holding a phone to his or her ear. A study showed that someone texting or having a conversation on a wireless headset drove as poorly as someone whose blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limits in Australia and Spain, where this was tested (0.5 grams per liter). The study also found that when the conversation over the headset was simple, the driver drove as someone under the influence of alcohol with a 0.4 g/L BAC. When the conversation was intense, the driver drove similar to someone with a BAC of 0.7, which is almost illegal in the United States. When texting, the study found someone drives similar to someone with a BAC of 1, which is illegal in every country mentioned.…

Distracted driving is more common among the younger generations. According to statistics, “11% of all drivers under the age of 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crash. For drivers 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes, 21 percent of the distracted drivers were distracted by the use of cell phones.” The law on using a cell phone while driving being illegal was established due to these staggering numbers. I believe this is more of a deterrent than anything else that has been done. Since this law was just mandated recently, there are no statistics out about whether or not it has affected the rate of distracted driving incidents.…

Distracted driving can have many forms. It can be texting, drinking, smoking, talking on the phone, looking for something in the car, and several others. All of these distractions can be taken care of by the actual drivers, but only some of them can be covered in Public Service Announcements. These PSAs typically focus on the horrific consequences of drinking and texting while driving. Several PSAs have been known to purposefully tug on heartstrings by showing the distraught family, or the poor pet who now has no owner. But rarely do these PSAs actually do anything to minimize the distracted driving. People remember the whimpering animal more than the actual material covered in the PSA. The PSAs that do show the unpleasant details of distracted…
