Divergent And Insurgent: Character Analysis
In ELA, the 7th graders are reading Divergent and Insurgent. Near the end of Divergent and the beginning of Insurgent, the Erudite attack Abnegation. In result to the attacks on Abnegation, Beatrice Prior, or Tris Prior, and Four, or Tobias Eaton, went to Amity, the factionless, and Candor because Dauntless and Abnegation were not safe. Dauntless is not safe because that is where Erudite were when they attacked Abnegation, and Abnegation is not safe because Erudite attacked Abnegation. In the books Divergent and Insurgent, some characters are inclined to power because, in the Divergent series, the society has fallen and, without the factions and faction leaders, everyone would go into anarchy. One person inclined to power is Evelyn Johnson, …show more content…
Jeanine is inclined to power because she is using the Dauntless to take over Abnegation for information, she used Erudite-Dauntless soldiers to check who was divergent at the Candor headquarters by injecting all of the people at Candor with longer lasting simulation, and many more. Tris thinks, ¨I thought Jeanine attacked the Abnegation to seize power, but she attacked them to steal information-information only they knew.¨(Roth, Insurgent 26). With the Abnegation almost dead and the Abnegation information taken to Erudite, Erudite have a lot of control for future simulations because she knows what all happened during the Dauntless simulation attack on Abnegation. Also, a bit after Erudite´s attack on Candor, Max, the representative at Erudite for the Candor and Erudite meeting, asked to Jack Kang, the leader of Candor, 3 requirements. The first was to return the Dauntless leader Candor holds unharmed, which is Eric. The second was to let Erudite’s soldiers search the Candor compound for divergents. The third, and last agreement, was to provide the names of the people who were not injected with the simulation serum, which, during the attack on Candor, they were in the needles. The reason Erudite wanted all these requirements to be meet is so they can eliminate all the divergent at …show more content…
The reason Tris is not inclined to power is because she does not want to become a Dauntless leader, and she goes to Erudite so that young Dauntless will not jump off the roofs when they are controlled by the simulation Erudite shot most Candor and Dauntless people with. The reason Tris is not a Dauntless leader is because there is always an odd number of Dauntless leaders, and 4 were nominated as leaders, Tris, Tobias, Tori, and Harrison. While choosing the Dauntless leaders, Tris and Tori say, “‘we only need three leader,’ Tori says. ‘We’ll have to vote.’...‘No,’ I say. I clear my throat and say it louder. ‘No, you don’t have to vote. I refuse my nomination.’ Tori raises her eyebrow at me. ‘Are you sure, Tris?’ ‘Yes’ I say. ‘I don’t want it. I’m sure’”(Roth, Insurgent 265/6). The reason Tris did not want to become a Dauntless leader was because she wanted Tobias to be popular with the Dauntless. Right after Erudite’s simulation on Marlene, Hector, and a young Dauntless girl, Tris thinks of the message they said, “I have a message for the Divergent. I am Divergent. This is not a negotiation. No, it is not. It is a warning. I understand. Every two days until one of you delivers yourself to Erudite headquarters… I will. ...this will happen again. It will never happen again.”(Roth, Insurgent 300). She did not want anymore young Dauntless to die, so she turns herself into the Erudite, not knowing what they will

The importance of being Divergent is first introduced to Beatrice after she completes her Aptitude Test (which determines which faction a person should choose). Tori (the test manager) reports to her: “’My conclusion,’ she explains, ‘is that you display equal aptitude for Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. People who get this result are…’ She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. ‘… are called … Divergent.’ She says the last word so quietly that I almost don’t hear it, and her tense, worried look returns. She walks around the side of the chair and leans in close to me. ‘Beatrice,’ she says, ‘under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone. This is very important.’” The manner in which Tori says that Tris is a Divergent means that it is an extremely rare condition that changes the way people look at them, and this is meant that Tris would have to create her identity alone. Likewise, as Tris possessed from both the Abnegation and the Dauntless (selflessness and bravery respectively), it was easier for her to create an identity accustomed towards the Dauntless; as explained by Four. After he and Tris exit the fear simulation room, he says: “’I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your…

Throughout the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert Neville, the last human who is immune to this disease, is an anti-hero. For instance, towards the end of the story, during his state of confusion after he woke up, he felt pain that he had not ever felt before and thought that it must mean it was the end and said to himself ‘’I am going to die’’ (p.164). This statement shows that he accepts that his life will end here and he will not try to fight it in any way in order to continue surviving. In addition to this, after he realizes where he is and what happened, Ruth came to check on him and asks him why he did not leave beforehand like she told him to in the letter she left him. In Veronica Roth’s Divergent, Tris has to make the most important decision of her life by choosing a new faction. Tris was born into a selfless faction, but she has a difficult time playing by their rules. On the other hand, she fits right into her new faction, and she enjoys the freedom that her old faction was not able to provide. Therefore, even though Tris hesitates about being in Dauntless, her lack of Abnegation qualities proves otherwise. This can be seen by looking at her lack of selflessness and her abundance of bravery.…

The excepted social theory of civilization’s social process was made by the scientists Adam Smith, John Millar, Adam Ferguson, and lastly Lord Kames. This social theory was that there were many levels of civility in a society. These levels were hunting, pasturage, agriculture, and commerce. One example of the first level which is hunting is the the Native Americans. The excepted social process is that a country was to go through all of these levels by starting out on hunting and eventually the society would mature and work its way up to the point of being a commercially based society. Now this process helped shaped the colonies culture of “civility” because the colonists were never hunters. When the colonists got to the North America they already knew that their society was going to stem from agriculture. That is what happened in the southern colonies. These colonies produced tobacco, indigo, and rice. Then after a large period of agricultural growth in the southern colonies the northern colonies started to produce raw materials to trade back to England. Then after that they started producing finished products but this did not go along with Britain’s mercantilistic policies. Either way the colonies culture was to trade goods and raw materials commercially. This is what makes the colonies so unique. This is because for most countries this process of climbing the metaphorical latter of social civility would have taken so much longer. That is how the social theory of civilization’s social process was made and how it came to shape the cultural civility in the American colonies.…

Q1 - In the film Divergent, a character I admire is Beatrice Prior or Tris. I admire her specifically because she is incredibly strong willed, brave, and dislikes showing weakness. This film is set in a futuristic Chicago, where the community is divided into 5 factions. Abnegation the selfless, Dauntless the brave, Eridute the intelligent, Condor the honest and Amity the peaceful. When all teenagers reach the age of 16, they are required to stay in the faction they were born into, or transfer to another faction, to stay for the rest of their lives. I believe that this is an absurd idea, mainly because the choice has to be made when still a teenager where this decision will decide the rest of your life. Tris was born into the faction of selflessness.…
