When JetBlue hired Ann Rhoades away from Southwest Airlines, she brought with her, her experience on how to set up the rules and regulations that JetBlue would use to manage its personnel. During JetBlue’s beginning operations, they relied upon five core values that were emblematic of the main characteristics of the company (Gittel & O’Reilly, 2001). These values included safety, caring, integrity, fun, and passion. Taking into consideration these five values, JetBlue used the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) acts to determine how, where, when, and which employees would join JetBlue as team members. In order for JetBlue to become successful, they needed to abide by the equal employment opportunity laws that formed a structured path that would enable the HR department to defend their decisions legally, if challenged. JetBlue started with high integrity standards and, to this day, continues to sustain these high standards (Gittel & O’Reilly, 2001). When hiring or dealing with personnel issues, some of the EEO acts that JetBlue references on a daily basis include the following: the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the 1972…
Long before the time of the duel among Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, years of political differences between the two men were commonly seen, and ultimately as a result had staggering effects on the development of the novice nation and the occurrence of the duel in the first place. Opposition between Hamilton and Burr initially arose in 1791 when Burr successfully seized position in the United States Senate from Philip Schuyler, Hamilton’s father-in-law.…

One of the objectives that the team discussed was diversity in the workplace. Major corporations have encountered issues concerning diversity in the work place. Our team can directly relate to this subject in the workplace since all of us are diverse minorities in our individual work place. It was discussed in the group that diversity in the workplace is the manager’s responsibility to insure that the workplace is a diverse environment. Managers in most companies are required to hire a diverse staff. Managers have the ability to use race, religion, and tenure as qualities to inspire success and productivity at work. Our team agreed that in the real world not all individuals will set aside their differences to work effectively together, but the process of how management deals with issues concerning diversity is crucial to building and maintaining an efficient workforce.…
. The purpose of this paper is to state that the United States Air force should recruit more African American officers. Diversity must be a priority. The Air force can increase the quantity of African American officers by focusing on 3 solutions: encouraging minority officers to mentor minority enlisted personnel, ensuring awareness of education opportunities amongst enlisted personnel, and targeting the civilian population.…
In read the Barriers and Challenges to Managing Diversity there was several problems present at Cityside Financial Services. One the problem was how the Sales Division was divided. When the investor banker brought the company it was mostly white. Two different units were created in sales which one catered to rich clients and other one serviced the local community. Knowing that neighborhood was once predominantly white things has changed over the years. Know that the neighborhood is mostly black Cityside thought it would be a great idea to have African-American employee mostly on the Retail area. Also, there was problem in hiring mostly women and black employees from the community. In my opinion, just because the neighborhood in mostly blacks it doesn’t mean that your staff has to be that way. There thinking was that since the neighborhood is mostly black now we would have black employees to services them. This in my mind created inaccurate stereotypes and prejudice has presented in Managing Diversity.…
Workplace diversity is defined as “ways that people differ that may affect their workplace experiences in terms of performance, motivation, and communication” (Harvey, 2011, p. xiv). It is important to have an understanding of cultural, ethnic and gender differences by managers and professionals in order to have an effective working environment. This can be accomplished when managers and professionals are able to understand their own identities, race/ethnicity, and their own biasness. While attempting to overcome our own biasness can be challenging, acknowledging them can prevent us from discriminating actions (Harvey, 2011).…

The practice of diversity is evolving over time, and no one company has perfected their approach. Many times, organizations who boast strong diversity initiatives that address the diversity needs of a certain group are woefully inadequate in addressing the needs of others. Perhaps this is due to diversity having its roots…
The discrimination-and-fairness paradigm operates on the assumption that “we are all the same” or “we aspire to being all the same” (Thomas & Ely, 1996, p. 81). Companies that use this paradigm focus on the numbers, or how well they achieve a minority “recruitment” level. They may even have programs to mentor and help minorities further advance their careers and train other employees…
Diversity has many faces that range from gender, culture, ethnicity, race, economic status, physical abilities, and many more, and this can be a problem that can affect many people who are employed or looking for employment in society because they are being judged or discriminated against for their differences. But if business took the time to understand the importance of differences in people so many doors could open for the employers and employees. Allowing diversity in the workplace could increase work morale, attendance, customers, and efficiency and create a less stressful environment for employees. This is possible by first increasing the diversity in the workplace and allowing for employees to learn about each other’s differences and…
The article in review explains the concept of diversity in management versus the notion of Affirmative action. Affirmative action (AA) was formed to counter the effects of a history of discrimination. AA was formed to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education and business from which they have been historically marginalised. However, AA has devalued the accomplishment of people who are chosen based on their social groups to which they belong rather than their qualifications. It has proven to a certain extent to have undesirable side-effects which somehow led to failing to achieve its goals. On the other hand, diversity in management is more appealing…
It has been stated that a diverse workplace is a crucial piece to building a strong and inclusive economy that is built to stand the test of time (. This could very well be the foundation to the current workplace diversity movement, but the statistics show otherwise, especially for African Americans. Whites make up about 64% of this nation’s workforce, while the remaining 36% are of people of color including the modest 12% that Blacks/African Americans occupy. This statistics shrinks significantly when…
Diversity is defined as “The ways in which people differ that may affect their organizational experience in terms of, communication, performance, motivation, and inclusion” (Harvey, C.P. & Allard, M.J., University of Phoenix, 2009). Diversity continues to create attention in the working environment and looks to employee personnel most qualified for the position instead of focusing on hiring minorities to show diversity in the organization.…
William Shakespeare was known as the greatest writer of the English language and has written many famous plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Othello. In Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet there are many similarities which exist between the Zeffirelli and Luhrmann’s version. As evident in the opening, balcony and the fighting scene. The Zeffirelli and Luhrmann’s version are similar because they both consist of a lot of action within the opening scene. For instance, the Zeffirelli’s version takes place in a marketplace where there are numerous people and animals. Similarly, in the Luhrmann’s version, the action begins with glimpses of the city where billboards can be seen in addition to cars and people. This goes to show that both the…
