This essay will contain an analysis and evaluation of images taken from A.O Neville’s book ‘Australia’s Coloured Minority: It’s Place In The Community’. Published in 1947, Neville argues in his book that ‘half-blood’ Aboriginal people can successfully live integrate into European society, which he proves through a series of photographs. At this time in Australian history, there was significant disparity between the established settler colonies from Britain, and the indigenous people of Australia. One key issue faced by the British Empire was the existence of ‘half-caste’ children.…
The concept of Diversity and obtaining its 'true' understanding continues to shape and reshape organizational culture globally. Article written by R. Roosevelt Thomas on Redefining Diversity, broadens the general knowledge of diversity within the workplace and our everyday lives. In fact, in the early 1990s studies were done to determine the meaning of diversity. For example, in 1997 the National Naval Research Council defined diversity as the presence of a significant number of women, members of underrepresented racial groups, and persons with disabilities throughout the organization (National Research Council Staff. Building a Diverse Workforce: Scientists and Engineers in the Office of Naval Research. Washington, DC, USA: National Academies Press, 1997. p viii. ) Although a general relative definition, R. Roosevelt Thomas provided a more in depth understanding of diversity and indicates in his article that diversity is no longer about the crucial distinctions between groups, but is the elements that encompasses both the differences and similarities of employees (Understanding and Managing Diversity, pg ___.) thus, creating a diversity mixture within corporations. For me, it is surprising to adjust to the notion that diversity can in fact relate to the similarities and/or qualities of constituencies. This helps to eliminate the thought process that diversity is one dimensional.…
In the essay, Nguyen’s book is the premise we have used; there are sourced references supporting the statements. A Vietnamese family is reviewed, how they suffered in their own country, escaping through Cambodia and Thailand, finally, finding a refuge in Australia. Australia was not, necessarily, an ideal place to finish at due to the fact that being multicultural was very new to Australians. We briefly looked at Malcolm Fraser and the White Australia policy, how it changed Australia and the way they thought about multiculturalism. ‘Multiculturalism’ has no agreed ‘definition’, taken literally, ‘multi-culture’ means, simply, ‘many cultures’. Examining the word ‘multiculturalism’, in conclusion, ‘multiculturalism’ means ‘different things to…

Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein and The Modern Prometheus wrote during her life in the eighteenth century. In this time she turned the phrase, “I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves.” These words were far before the modern twenty-first century movement of feminism. Long before her time she foresaw the problems with the movement and perceptions of it. This quote simply states, women do not need to have power of men but they need to have power over themselves.…
Every day the global workforce is growing and for many years there has been big issues within the workplace. One of those big issues being diversity. Every employee has something very unique to bring to the company. The ideal company will have the best team players with great work ethic. In a growing global workforce, some of these differences cause barriers which can affect the company.…
Walking into a local Wal-Mart the first things noticeable is the many different people strolling by. There are African Americans, Caucasians, a Mexicans and much more. Just by the looks of it you can see that America is a very diverse place. Diversity can put an important influence on our complex society in America. Diversity is important to our nation because of the new values that are learned from each individual culture; it helps to overcome prejudices, and also helps us understand each other’s perspectives.…
The Aboriginal Resource Centre, in the Office of Intercultural Affairs, recognizes the fluidity of language and that, in the context of this land and community, certain terms are preferred or contested by different Indigenous people and communities.…
Diversity in america is a trademark of the beauty in our country. Without diversity, America wouldn’t be what it is today. A country that is an obvious reflection of the multiple cultures it contains. The rise and struggle of the African-Americans, The Spanish, Asian, and European immigrants who have all come to the U.S. and contributed to a diverse country. Chinese resturaunts, Soccer, Spanish music, There are so many diverse things that we love. With myself being a part of the Diverse community, it has shown me that being different doesn’t matter. Whether you’re Black, White, or Guynease, anyone can be accepted and become a good friend.…
One thing all Americans have in common is diversity. Having diversity causes Americans to work together and form a bond and treat everyone as they would like to be treated. We also have our freedom in common. Everyone has rights of speech, religion, press, etc. so everyone can define who they are and who we will become. Everyone has different ideas as to what being an American means, but to me it means that we have individuality, that we take pride on our country, and that we can be opportunists.…
The United States of America is made up of several different races, religions, and ethnicities, as well as men and women of different ages, and sexual orientations. This makes the United States one of the most diverse nations on earth. It is estimated between the years 2010 to 2050 minorities will increase from 36% to 54% of the population. (Schaefer, p. 4, 2012)(p.4). Immigration is the main reason for this estimate. It is estimated that in 2050, 67 million people will be immigrants and another 47 million people will be the children of immigrants. (The "Pew Research Center") (2012). While there are benefits of such a diverse nation, the United States still faces many challenges, because of prejudice and discrimination.…
It is important for managers to be educated on diversity, and have an understanding of the differences in their workforce’s population, because it will improve performance potential and increase employee satisfaction. There are numerous benefits to valuing diversity. With each unique combination of gender, ethnic background, culture, and life experiences, each person brings a different set of strengths, skill sets, and approaches to problems. According to Bell, (2007) , “Valuing diversity can benefit organizations in the areas of cost, resource acquisition, marketing, creativity, problem solving, and system flexibility”. An employee’s satisfaction is much higher when they feel accepted and valued for their unique qualities.…
Racism is visibly a continuing pattern in Australian society. It has been prevalent for many years, and has infiltrated through many generations of Australians. It is a highly observable fact, yet often ignored. It can be seen that the reason for it, however, can be based on the poor education system in Australia. In my essay, I will be discussing how racism forms at a young age due to our education system, what is being done about it, racism towards ethnic students and how racism is prevalent in many educational institutions.…
Cultural diversity will support the idea that every person can make positive and unique contribution to larger society because of rather than being in differences. If in a place diversity is valued and respected; various cultures and their ideas are valued and acknowledged; all groups of people are encouraged; people are encouraged to achieve their goals and their differences are celebrated as per “Lisa D. Belfield.”…
What is diversity to you? From the streets of San Francisco you are transported into many different countries. You smell different foods, see different looks, and hear different languages. These diverse cultures make San Francisco special. If the city of San Francisco introduced a law to adopt a standard language it would end the diversity that San Francisco stands for. In Northern California we speak our own dialect which consists of slang words such as “hina” and “trippin”.We use code switching when it comes to talking to our friends and family. When I speak to my friends it’s more of a relax and formal language that I speak to them in opposed to when I…
