Diversity Work Environment
This globalization of the industry is the perfect time to value and welcome diversity to the growing sector (Korjala, 2012). Diversity is valuable to the hospitality and tourism industry for three key reasons: diversity fosters a desirable work environment, company reputation, and increase in profits (Gong, 2008).
Work environments have changed drastically over the past forty years. No longer do people work 9 to 5, or have relaxed open schedules. The work environment today is more complex, places value in customer perspective, and makes well needed room for diversity (Kelly, 2015). A desirable work environment in the hospitality and tourism industry is created by innovation, competitiveness, and knowledge transfer. All of these things would not be working at their full potential without a diverse group of employees. Diverse employees bring in a unique and attractive set of skills and experiences that are valuable specifically to the hospitality and tourism industry. This creates jobs for people with low education levels and Not only can businesses hire minorities to increase their reputation, but also companies can create business partnerships with minority business owners. Buying from vendors that are owned by minorities in the community keeps the money in the community and promotes the business’ reputation by buying locally and supporting minority businesses. Diversity in the workplace also allows for better employee job retention.
