“Dog Sees God,” an unofficial parody of “Peanuts” that played March 5 at the Struble Theater, tells the story of C.B. (presumably “Charlie Brown”), a teenager surrounded by doubt and conflict. Most of the cast did a respectable job at communicating both the humor and confusion of adolescence, but one actress stuck out to me most. Katie Chang, though appearing in only one scene as “Van’s Sister,” completely stole the show and blew everybody out of the water. Her performance managed to be natural and dynamic at the same time, which I couldn’t say the same for other actors in the production.…
Personification: Personification is an example of figurative language in which nonhuman objects are given human characteristics or abstract ideas are presented as people by the author. Personification can make descriptions of non-human entities more vivid, or can help readers understand, sympathize with, or react emotionally to non-human characters. The connotative associations that are made with personified subjects allow for This literary device is an example of one the five principal tropes of literature and can be found in novels, poems, and other literary works.…
In Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams, Codi Noline is a lost and directionless young woman who's always felt like she doesn't belong anywhere. Though when she finds out her father has Alzheimer's, she decides to move back to her hometown, Grace, to take care of him, and is overwhelmed with the task of sorting through her past. Codi has always resented her father, Doc Homer, for raising her and her sister to be different - when that is really just his way of bringing them closer by pushing everyone else further away. She constantly complains about how her father never reached out, and ignores Doc Homer's attempts to express his love throughout the course of the book. The story approaches Codi as the victim, but in reality, Doc Homer is the one who suffers the most.…
Further information: Candy is an old handyman, aging and has only one hand most probably because of an accident. With only one hand he would most probably not be very useful around the ranch. As he has aged his dog has aged also once an impressive sheep herder and now a worn out dog. Candy seems like a friendly character that doesn't like getting into trouble and understands the ranch very well, meaning he has been there for quite a while. From what he says he doesn't seem too happy in the ranch and probably has hopes of owning a farm like George and Lennie.…
Music can be more than just something to dance or sing along to. It is also a form of art and a way for people to let their feelings out in a different way. Many people write music to express any sort of feeling, such as happiness, anger, and depression. By putting out their music they can connect to their fans, friends, and family in a way that is easier for them and everyone can find a way to relate to them. The songs “From Dog to God” by Prayers, “Undercover Martyn” by Two Door Cinema Club, and “Hey You” by Pink Floyd all express the effects of isolation and how it gets in the way of their lives.…
Elizabeth and William Darcy are a young, working couple living in their 1100 square foot condo. They work ten hour days, four days a week and in their down time, enjoy travelling the city via public transit. The couple are looking to get a dog, and Elizabeth wants to adopt her favourite breed, the German Shepherd. Due to the couple’s busy lifestyle, adopting this breed of dog may not be a suitable choice. The German Shepherd may not be an ideal pet for this couple due to its exercise and enrichment requirements and the challenge of travelling with this breed using public transit, but there are alternative breeds that would better adapt to their lifestyle.…
Have you ever wondered why we own pets? According to Freud, animals are unaffected by the corruption and suffering caused by society, and, because of this, are desirable companions for humans. Freud hints towards the idea that animal’s companionship helps us relieve stress, gives us comforting attention, and also gives us something to care for, thus leading us to feel unconditional love. In my essay, I will first introduce the common ideas regarding why we own animals and the benefits of having them. Then I will discuss Freud’s analysis of pets through Civilization and Its Discontents and also through his own experiences with his dogs. Lastly, I will explain the effects of pets on human mental health, and conclude with the discussion of animal…
Canines and Felines have always held a very special companionship with humans on this earth. The realization that most homosapians will put more effort and be more defensive over their personal animals more so than they would another human, is in my opinion, obvious within the societal structure of the United States.…
Banned in Sweden, neutered, muzzled, and microchip-identified in Great Britain, and prohibited from entering some areas of North America, the pit bull terrier is as much a victim of the press as it is of its historic breeding to fight other dogs. Some unscrupulous owners, taking advantage of its natural tenaciousness and strength, continue to use abusive training techniques to produce fighting pit bulls, willing to take on any animal, and even humans. Therefore, pit bulls are said to be popular with irresponsible owners, who see these dogs as a symbol of machismo. This type of owner may be less likely to socialize, train, or desex their pet. Obviously, irresponsible ownership can have a great impact on how a breed is represented in attack statistics. However, what hasn¡¯t been…
You walk your black lab down the street. You clench the leash, it's your first time walking alone. You begin to loosen the leash with each step, your lips form a smile and like a soldier returning from battle you march. The lab wants to stop to eat grass, you don’t let her. Just like mom told you, you are the one in control. You pull the leash closer to your body. As you pass the first house on your left you remember the screams and the yelling and being woken in the middle of the night. Every night. One day a police car came, and after that the screams stopped. You don’t know why. You wanted to be a policeman or a fighter pilot or a chef or Batman, just like every other kid in your class.…
