I have often wondered what we are actually doing there -both collectively and individually - and what, if anything, we hope to achieve.
For me, it is a mixture of feelings, hopes and emotions:
One the one hand, I wish to 'remember' the pain, suffering and loss of all servicemen and women and all civilians who gave all they could give in support of the doctrine and orders of the day - whether 'friendly' or 'enemy', and the worthless wish that no-one should ever suffer or lose their life's, in m name, ever again. How many dead 'you and me's' did it take before those at the top decided that the head of the enemy state had to be specifically targeted and killed?
I would suggest that this is one of the few times that politicians and world leaders actually consider what we, the hoi polloi, the servers, the dictated to and persuaded subjects, face and consider every day of our lives - the fear of consequence!
I have always believed that wars are the result of the greedy and power hungry having their way. Position, wealth and influence over others, are the ultimate reasons behind wars.
Religion, often pointed at as the reason for most wars, is little more than influence over others, promulgated by those previously indoctrinated and altered through time by the, so called, holier than thou' brigade because they are closer to your god than you are, and seek power over more. So they, like politicians, dictate the tune and tempo.
