Dr. Anderson Presentation Summary
Dr. Anderson Presentation Summary Dr. Anderson based her presentation off of signal function, reliability, and the evolution of animal communication systems. Her research also focuses on whether a behavior is adaptable by determining if it contributes to an animal’s reproductive success. Dr. Anderson began with a brief introduction by defining a signal as any behavioral, physiological, or morphological trait that was fashioned or maintained by natural selection in communicating with others. There is a problem, however, with the ability to signal because one may encounter cheater signalers or unreliable signals. The puzzle is: How is the signal maintained if the animal came to eventually ignore the deceptive signals? …show more content…
Anderson then went on to describe the focus of her research. She studies song learning as a reliable signal of cognitive ability in sparrows where the males have to learn to sing. How well a male learns a song and reproduces it will ultimately determine the amount of females that it is able to attract. The male sparrows learn their song by listening to other males. They then acquire a neural template or memory that allows them to take the information they have integrated, apply it and then finally learn to sing. This song learning also relates to developmental stress alluding to the fact that since learning depends on pathways in the brain, early environments of stress to a developing sparrow will effect the quality of song a male produces. Within this complex mechanism are two phases of learning the song. The sensory phase deals with the perception or listening to the song and then memorizing the song. The sensorimotor phase is the production and perception phase where the birds sing and listen to their own song. It was interesting how Dr. Anderson noted that these sparrows are close ended learners, so the song they learn in their first year will last for their entire

The vast world of technology is at your finger tips, should you accept it or not? A new chip that can be installed into people and would grant them unlimited online resources is at your disposal, such as the feed implant that is widely used in the novel Feed by M. T. Anderson. In the novel the feed implant is something those who can afford it get when they are infants and gives them access to all the information in the world and be able to chat anyone, play video games, and do your shopping on it. It has taken out the need for most of the technology we use today. I would purchase and install that new chip inside of myself because it has many benefits from it.…

Also, another type of test that supported the reporting of the article was a study from researchers at Leidan University. What the researchers hypothesized was the parrots shared a common song system with song birds, but later on evolved a new song system that surpassed the old one and improved vocal learning ability. What this means is this study was found to be similar to how human brains developed new languages from their…

MacCaig continues to contrast the sparrow and other birds by stating in stanza three about the sparrow that “He carries what learning he has lightly ... on the usefulness whose result is survival.” MacCaig is saying here that the sparrow only keeps what information is useful to his survival. Whereas MacCaig then states that the other birds will “die in the snow” when winter begins and that the sparrow will survive. MacCaig is commenting that despite the other birds various talents it is the dowdy talentless bird that continues to live and that the educated talented birds will die because their talents and education is not what can get them through difficult times. Therefore the poem informs…

The following movies that I decide on were Straight Outta Compton “NWA” Directed by F. Gary Gray and My Cousin Vinny Directed by Jonathan Lynn. Both films have their differences as NWA faces police harassment in 1987, and later caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to put a stop to discriminating local police officer. But in NWA reasons were to inform the people about police brutality and racial profiling, and in its lyrics quickly said consider the use of violence against police. While My Uncle Vinny film displays a good case of the relationship between language and context in verbal communication.…

For example, honeybees can convey important information about the geographical distance and direction of food sources. (Cooper et al, 2002). They are able to do this by communicating with other group members using two different types of dance movements to convey different meanings. They will use a round dance if they have found food within 50 metres of the hive and a wiggle dance if the location is in a more remote location. Additionally, it was discovered during an experiment (Kirschner and Towne, 1994) that the bees who displayed this behaviour, had to also make a sound with their wings in order for the communication to be completely effective. Another…

Behaviorism had many shortfalls with its primary one being that it excluded the effect of genetics entirely. It only accounted for what had been learned through reward and punishment only. Questions were raised and answers were missing when examining the question through the lens of behaviorism only. One area where ethologists observed discrepancies were in fixed-action patterns and critical periods in animals. Fixed-action patterns were behaviors that received little to no reward or punishment in which the animals engaged in and critical period referred to a specific period of time in which if a…
