WHAT?
What is the plot?
Sophie starts a philosophy class taught to her by Albert Knox. He sends her packages by his dog named Hermes which are relevant to her interest in philosophy. Sophie feels that philosophy is vital information to learn and that it should be questioned.
Conflict?
One day Sophie receives a Happy Birthday postcard for a young lady named Hilde Moller Knag from her father, Albert Knag. Later Sophie finds a scarf with Hilde's name on it. Sophie feels that it is all related to her philosophy course in some way.

Sophie is a well educated young lady who may take time to question herself and life simply because she lives outside of the suburbs and only has Joanna as her best friend.
What kind of mood do the time and place create?
It creates a relaxing mood because of the beautiful scenery that is described.
How do the time, place, and mood of the story help its interpretation?
The time, place, and mood help me interpret the time of day (at the beginning of the book) and the possible dates. The mood helped me determine the demeanor of the people around Sophie and the ones who influence her the most. Sophie seems in to be in a good environment for her and for her study of philosophy.
WHY?
What are the roles and motivations of the characters?
Sophie's motive is to learn all she can about philosophy. At the end of the story her motive changes to trying to interfere with Hilde and Albert's live. Alberto's motive is to teach Sophie about philosophy. Together, both Sophie and Albert's motives are to escape the mind of Albert Knag.
