Hello everyone, today I will talk about the book “A Monster Calls”.
This book features a teenage boy who struggles to cope with the mom’s terminal cancer, which never seems to get better. He’s visited in the middle of the night by a monster who tells stories.
This book was, first, the idea of Siobhan Dowd, who suffered, too, of terminal cancer but she died before she could finish it. So, the publisher, Walker, decided that Patrick Ness was the one to finish the story.
Now, I will talk about the origins of the book. As I mentioned earlier, Dowd had terminal cancer and she started writing the novel while going through her illnesses. She decided to work with Denise Johnstone-Burt at Walker Books, who also worked with Ness. That’s the reason why Ness was assigned to finish the book.
This is the plot of the story:
The 13-year-old boy, Conor, was experiencing a nightmare, one with darkness, wind and screaming. At 7 minutes after midnight, a voice calls him from outside his window, where there was a church, a graveyard and most importantly, a yew tree. When Conor is at the window, he meets the monster, the towering mass of branches and leaves looking like a human. The monster, then, convinces Conor to summon it and he says that it will help Conor with his problems by telling him 3 short stories. But, the monster had a condition: Conor had to tell him his nightmare.
Always at 12:07am, the monster meets Conor and tells its stories and between them we learn that Conor’s mom was going through chemotherapy and has been afflicted with cancer for the past months. His father was nowhere to console him, and there was no help from the cold relationship with his grandmother, either. And this is not all, Conor is a victim of bullying at school and he doesn’t have any socializing contacts. The mother’s condition worsens even if Conor asks the monster to give him a special yew tree medicine to help with the mom’s condition.
