Dream In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men

America promises many dreams. Dreams of riches, freedom and even tranquility. But is our promise fulfilled? The answer is no. We are promised dreams that, in the end, are proven to be non-existent. The reality is, our dreams are impossible and elusive. All dreams are proven to be impossible. In the book, “Of Mice and Men”, George says, “I think I knowed from the very first. I think we’d never do her.” “Her” is the dream the George and Lennie shared. George said that he never actually believed in the dream, he just got so used to repeating it to himself. In the book “Of Mice and Men”, before the action of the story begins, circumstances have robbed most of the characters of these wishes. Curley’s Wife explained to Lennie that she “wanted to
be in the pictures”, but due to her aunt’s supposed interference, she couldn’t pursue her dream, ultimately marrying Curley to be away from her. As a result of all the characters being stripped of their dreams, proves that it is impossible. The “American Dream” has also been known to be elusive. No matter how close any of the characters get to achieving their goals, it ultimately escapes their grasp. In the book “Of Mice and Men”, Curley’s Wife’s aunt prevented her from achieving her dream of being “in the photos.” Her dream showed up in front of her, and it vanished as fast as it came. Another example of the elusiveness is of Candy’s dream to be with George and Lennie on their farm. He overheard them, and gave them a great offer, and he joined them. But as we know, later events unfolded that prevented them from being able to accomplish their dreams. No matter how close they were, it ended up escaping from them. Dreams are fairy tales that we’ve created. And just like fairy tales, they’re unrealistic, fake and impossible. Although our dreams are pleasuring, it is just a false hope; leaving us at the last moment with it’s bags packed, and giving us broken hearts
