What scores of people fail to perceive is what the American dream genuinely is. The American dream is not the Wizard of Oz, granting wishes to the hopeless and misunderstood. The American dream gives people a CHANCE at success. This is merely an opportunity to succeed. What a person executes with that opportunity is entirely up to the individual. Moreover, the American dream is not served on a silver platter, it must be worked for.
In Martin C. Jischke’s speech on the American dream, he says “I believe the American dream is the opportunity to live in a nation in which diversity is celebrated as the source of strength and beauty” (Jischke, pg. 75). The American dream gives a person the job, but it’s up to the individual to execute the work. What a lot of people not imply to identify is how superb we have it in America. There are millions of people who will never get the opportunity to show how much they are willing to work or how vigorously they are willing to work to succeed. It is crucial that, as Americans, we recognize what we have so that it does not become maltreated. The American dream is something that needs to be preserved, hence future generations will receive the same
opportunity. During the Great Depression, citizens worked lengthy and rigorous days to earn a few cents. Jischke writes “In 1931 when the term American dream was introduced, U.S. employment exceeded 16 percent. Eight million people were without work.”(Jischke, pg. 75). It is ironic that this term virtually had more meaning to people in the past compared to the present. People struggled to earn a penny every day and now generally people won’t even bother to finish their free education for the reason that it is too difficult for them. I believe the laziness of our country is contributing to the fall of the American dream. In addition, we just aren’t working as much. A voluminous amount of people want everything given to them. It is problematic to find those who still desire to work. The beings that crave the hustle and bustle of a busy work life hang in the alleyways of the American dream. Those types of people are the ones that keep the American dream alive. They avoid the temptation of laziness and strive to succeed. In order to keep the American dream alive, it is important to motivate and draw advantage from what it so easily accessible. If we achieve that, thenceforth the American dream won’t be tossed to entropy. Instead, it will flourish and continue on in the hearts of the American people. The American dream is being restricted by laziness and the misconception that opportunity and success are the same. If a person digs their hands in deep enough, they can still find the remains of the American dream in the soil of our founders. All it acquires is a few hands to resurface and plant the seed of ambition and opportunity.
