I wasn’t born a leader. No tragic event made me open my eyes to become a leader. In actuality, my mother enrolled me into an all-female women’s empowerment leadership program without my consent. I was not insecure, my grades were superb; I was however, an active follower of the most uninfluential group of friends every parent dreads. Being a follower instead of a leader is a very childlike trait. It takes an adult, woman or man, to step up and take charge in doing what they know is best for themselves and those who follow. When I’m not being a quirky goofball Emma Jean Bouie, I’m being sophisticated, empowered woman little miss Nadia Moffet. Ever since I met Nadia Moffet, C.E.O of The Queens Foundation and Miss North Carolina 2010, she has instilled something spiritually and mentally inside of me that has helped shape the young leader I am today. From the age of 13, I was no longer just Emma Jean Bouie, I slowly became, “a beautiful, powerful and strong beyond measure woman.’…
What stands out the most is that Ladkin approaches leadership from a philosophical point of view. In doing so, she extends beyond the who’s and how-to’s of leadership and instead focuses on the why’s and what-if’s. Many people might ask the question “What is leadership?” Few, however, would ask “How might we understand leadership as a phenomenon?” The latter is exactly the type of question that Ladkin encourages. Overall, she has taught us that there is more than one way to look at leadership and challenges us to let go of our previously held views of the…

Developing the Leader Within You by John C. Maxwell is a practical application to servant leadership. In this book Maxwell outlines the skills necessary to become a great leader, or to simply excel from one level of leadership to another. Maxwell suggests ten principles on which the foundation of great leadership is built. In assessing my own leadership skills, the principles with which I am most effective are Influence, Integrity and People. In order to become a better leader, I must adjust my Attitude, learn and study Staff Development and organize my Priorities.…
Located deeper than 2000 meters underneath the ocean surface, lies a biome that we have barely seen and realize. This unbelievable and incredible biome is called the abyssal zone. With a depth reaching down to 6000 meters, it is impossible to inhabit this biome. Conversely, certain organisms have managed to keep their survival in this very biome through particular processes.…

Leadership is defined as the leading of a group or an organization of people. I arrived at HOBY expecting that to be the definition of leadership that would once again be given to me. Although, contrary to what I believed, that wasn’t the description I received. HOBY taught me that to be a leader I don’t have to strictly lead others. I can also lead myself because I can make a difference. I have to be the change I wish to see in this vast world that I call my home. This is the reason I want to be a volunteer for HOBY Kansas. I want to help others have the amazing time I was lucky enough to experience. I believe that I can easily relate to others thanks to the blue side of me and that I’m extremely organized and time oriented thanks to my inner gold. These characteristics of myself could also double as challenges because not every individual would agree with the way I handle…

As I learned to be a leader, I gained knowledgeable insights in organizing and planning activities for our school. Our school’s student council is the chief, if not only student organization to plan major activities that involve all the student population. This year our student council planned and carried out one of the most successful homecomings in attendance in the recent years of our school. Attendance to the Homecoming dance was almost three quarters of the student population, making it one of the most successful in my high school career. Along with the homecoming dance, our school also plans a spirit fun day, which is a day were all high school students get off to play many games, and participate in many activities. Most of our activities were planned to take place outside, but due to a pop up shower we had to quickly change our plans for inside activities. Through the planning of the homecoming dance, and the spirit fund day, I have learned that there are many more aspects to leadership than I had thought. Even though it was considered a success by many people’s standards, I still noticed many mistakes that could have been prevented. What I took from our planning of homecoming most was leadership, even in successful leadership, there is still room to learn and improve.…
The topic of discussion for this week is “Discovering Your Authentic Leadership”. When discovering your Authentic Leadership, you have to look in your inner self and be the best and stand out from other leaders. No one can be an authentic leader by trying to imitate someone else characteristics of becoming a great leader. The respect level is way higher when you are yourself instead of trying to be like another leader. Being authentic doesn’t mean you are perfect, it means to build the leader’s legitimacy through relationships with followers that are honest, value follower input, and build on an ethical foundation. Being a leader is in all of us as stated by Young &Rubicam chairman and CEO Ann Fudge, said, “All of us have the spark of leadership in us, whether it is in business, in government, oars a nonprofit volunteer”. The characteristic of a leader are learned not given you have to experience failure and success at the same time you are progressing to be a strong and authentic leader. When discovering your authentic leadership it involves a huge commitment and the understanding of yourself. You have to develop yourself and create a blueprint on how to be an effective leader. Your life story has an effect on how strong you will be as you embark on being a leader, everyone has a story and most leaders remember when they didn’t have, or someone they really wanted there wasn’t there for support, role models they looked up too as well. You have to realize your potential and that life goes on you have to live you have to make decisions in life to accommodate you in the future. Some key points in your life story are unexpected deaths, illnesses and being rejected by your own peers make you stronger but makes you weak but you cannot show your weakness never. Authentic leaders lead by example, make a difference and be a philosopher to the younger peers in his/her team to create a power team to become the best that you all can be.…
