Drink Monologue
Voices rise in the caves. They get jumbled into the air, but can be heard from miles back. Inside, people are yelling and screaming at each other, throwing stuff and kicking. FIghts erupt and get out of hand, with guys punching, and girls pulling each other’s hair. Turmoil, mayhem, chaos have all broken out into the hot air of the island. Unknowingly, a thud of thunder rumbles in the distance.

Tears fall down my face as I run through the tunnels and out towards the night. I cannot believe what just happened. Through the hollow walls, I can still hear them yelling, screaming, and cursing. This can’t be happening, I think to myself as I try to calm down. It can’t. I sink down onto the grass, and inhale the cool air. It changed since the morning and I much preferred this weather. Jabbing my fingers into my skin, I try to pinch this nightmare away. My eyes close and I feel dizzy, even when lying down. I want to sleep, I want this to all go away.

Something hard hits my back and I let out cry of pain. It hurts so much, I think in my head. I don’t want to be here, I really don’t. Boink. Boink. Boink. Boink. Boink. Boink. Boink. Massive balls are suddenly raining down and hitting me. It felt like hardened softballs being thrown at me with the full force of a grown man. It wasn’t rain, and it definitely wasn’t right. I tried to think about the name of it… my mind was disoriented and all I could feel was the torture on my body.
I feel a light bulb go off in my head. Hail. It wasn’t even normal hail; It was enormous balls of hail falling from the sky, thousands coming down at a time. I scream and scream. The throbbing sting is unbearable. Tears stream down my face and I let out the loudest cry I could possibly summon with my voice. Hail hits my head, but a then so does a

One foot forward, yet two steps back. The words, no, the screaming, echo off the walls in my head. Still, the faint touch of your body rips at my skin. My mind pleaded for help, for security, for shelter, but my heart insisted to stay. “We need to leave” it whispered, fearing he would hear us. “What if this is love” I called back. I ached in a silent cry for freedom. None of this was what I expected; none of this is what I wanted. Love did not equal confinement. It did not mean giving up on lifelong dreams, yet my body ached in defeat. The air was suffocating, but, nevertheless, I had to keep moving. Only God knows if I could get back up after yet another beating. Silence is not an option. These were the painful feelings that raced through…

My body is under attack. An attack I am all too familiar with. It feels as if an explosive has detonated in my head. I am disoriented and struggling to get my thoughts together. The pain is intense and crippling. I tilt my head back, and rest it on the headboard hoping for relief. I shut my eyes, and gently place my hands on my temples. As I begin to massage my temples, the invader silently enters into my thoughts and begins to taunt me, “You deserve everything you get, he whispers”. “It doesn’t matter how you try to escape me, I will be here. I will be here today, tomorrow, and for the remainder of your life”. Trying to ignore the whisper, I grab two Advil off the nearby nightstand, and wash them down with a sip of coffee. I squeeze my eyes tight, and begin to feel tears burn the back of my eyelids. My thoughts begin to become tainted with feelings of despair, hopelessness and sorrow. I open my eyes, and standing within arm’s reach of me, is my ten year old son. I choke back my tears, force myself to smile and reach out for a hug.…

Believe me I have to live with that every day of my life. But in order to leave him, I had to believe that it was the only thing I could do. And that it was the best thing for him. However, I have since gotten some help, and I have worked very, very hard to become a whole human being. And I don’t think I should be punished. Billy’s only seven years old. He needs me. I’m not saying he doesn’t need his father, but I really believe he needs me more. I was his mommy for five and a half years. And Ted took over that role for eighteen months. “Just calm down!” My friends tell me as I lose control of my body. My face soaked from the tears leaving my eyes. The pain in my chest that comes from suffocating. It feels as if I’m drowning in isolation. No one understands, but they hopelessly repeat the usual generic phrases “you’ll be okay.’’ As if I have any sense of reasoning.
