The most important points of emphasis in this book There are a few important points that are emphasized in Pink’s Drive, one of the most important being that the operating system our society runs on today needs a serious upgrade. His metaphorical uses of Motivation 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 put it into perfect perspective for exponentially growing, technologically centered recent generations. Just like a well built computer, our society runs on key smaller parts working in sync to make one big functioning machine. However, when those small parts fail to work together, the whole system will malfunction. This key point leads to another important point emphasized in the book; our small parts are out of sync. Pink believes this has been brought on by greasing up these small gears and pivotal pieces the wrong way. Society and individuals alike evolve ceaselessly, and never at consistent rates. What worked to manage these parts and pieces for a very long time has changed. The answer is that we must change with it. Motivating people though the carrot-stick, or reward-punishment, system worked to get us very far; as did the motivation to stay alive and work for food and shelter in our earliest, Motivation 1.0, years. But now, Motivation 3.0 will bring us to the next step in our evolutionary process as a society, an economy, individuals, and businesses alike. It is all tied together as a machine. To ensure it runs smoothly, we must cater to the smallest inner workings. A third key point of emphasis in this book is these inner workings are not at all thirsting for what we originally thought. Money, rewards, praise, benefits; they all sound like something that would motivate a person to accomplish any desired task graciously. Little did we know that these seemingly intense motivators were actually inhibiting our abilities; actually holding us back from our greatest potential. What was
