Drought Paper
Every day some people wake up not knowing if they can have fresh water to drink and clean with. Has anybody in the world thought of that? At least some people care about the ones in need for clean and fresh water but has anyone thought of what is happening to the planet? Of course not! Many children think that water is something that can never stop but they are wrong. The United States of America is in a major drought right now as I speak. The Amid drought has caused more that seventeen cities to have the lack of fresh water. On January 17th, Governor Jerry Brown had declared that there was a drought. But yet there is no one that has been trying to help. He had said to everyone including the press, “Make no mistake, this drought is a big wakeup call.”(http://news.msn.com/us/brown-tells-californians-to-conserve-amid-drought ) As Jerry Brown talks to the agency officials who serves water to the most of Southern California about the water conservation. He had tried to tell Californians to reduce their water usage by at least twenty percent. There is no way that people will survive this major drought if no one is going to step it up. The food products value will be in high demand. While the cost will be soaring high but the value of farmers will decrease. While everyone is on their phones chatting and texting away, there are few people that actually care about the planet. These people are the ones who care about the Earth and the future. The Amid drought has shown great difference. Some parts of California is in an extreme drought while others are in a less extreme drought but is on the verge of having an extreme drought. Even though many people know that the cause of the hotter climates now is because of human kind and carbon dioxide. The overdose of pollution has finally taken its toll on the Earth. There is no turning back now because the past is the past and now we have to face the consequences to our actions.
As Governor Jerry Brown had said

According to “Drought Frames Economic Divide of Californians” by Adam Nagourney and Jack Healy, California’s drought is causing a financial obstacle. Water usage needs to be limited. Therefore water prices are raised to create an incentive to save water for necessities. They point out that the financial issue evolves into a moral issue between the classes.…

In the article How Much Of California’s Drought Was Caused By Climate Change? Scientists Now Have The Answer, Katie Valentine provides studies from researchers who use data to calculate “how much of the current drought could be blamed on climate change” which ultimately led to the conclusion that a mixture of “steadily rising temperatures due to climate change, along with natural weather variability in California, led to more and more water evaporating from the soil.” Therefore, this illustrates that climate change does play a role because of the higher temperatures. Also from the study, researchers found that droughts like the one in California are becoming increasingly likely in many areas because of climate change — is one of the study’s most important conclusions.” Thus, mixture of problems between high water evaporation and high temperatures pinpoints the need to analyze the climate conditions further so California can be…

But with California in a drought, one may ask, how is it that the San Joaquin Valley is still prospering? The answer is simple: aquifers, or as dictionary.reference.com defines it, “any geological formation containing or conducting ground water, especially for one that supplies the water for areas such as wells or springs.” When there is no water from the sky or flowing from the reservoirs, the valley farmers must go underground. Farmers and companies are digging into the ground to get the water that they need. It is a race to the bottom and the valuable aquifers beneath may soon be depleted. Former Sacramento mayor, Phil Isenberg stated in the San Jose Mercury News newspaper, “It's our savings account, and we're draining it. . .at some point there will be none left” (Krieger). The depletion of the aquifers causes another major problem, other than the lack of agricultural jobs, profit, and water. The emptied, or low in water, aquifers cause the land to…

In the worst of times California’s climate is destructive to the well being of not only Californian’s quality of life, but the surrounding ecosystems. With unseasonably high temperatures presenting issues farther into the future, in “Adapting California's water management to climate change”, the authors Ellen Hanak and Jay Lund provide an overview of the effects California’s climate has during times of drought, and the complications it presents for the State's water management. Water management in the state oversees a plethora of concerns; properly planning, supply and delivery of water, quality assurance, addressing floods, the corresponding risks it presents, and the use of water as an energy source through hydropower. Larger governmental powers, like the State and Federal organizations, both have control over the above stated aspects of water management when dealing with California’s climate. The smaller, local, governmental bodies uphold the day to day operations of those systems. Best described by Hanak and Lund as “institutional diversity”, citing that the widespread sharing of responsibilities offers greater flexibility in response to unforeseen challenges each face, relying on the innovation of processes towards a wetter tomorrow. From the perspective of those in charge of the water management in the state,…

Southern California imports about 85% of its water, most of it coming from the Colorado River. Because we import so much water, we are becoming too dependant on outside water sources, which needs to change if we ever want the drought to end. California has started pumping more groundwater in response to this threat, but over-pumping groundwater is not the solution either. In order to eliminate the importing of water, we need to turn to desalination, recycled water, and rainwater harvesting.…

According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, “People can also play a big role in drought. Two years ago, when I was in high school, our social science teacher told us there had a serious drought in Southern California. Most of us did not know anything about it and we felt so surprised about this new. Today, when I heard this new again, I can’t believe that the drought still exist in Southern California, I thought it already solved by the government because it had been two years when I heard this new. From most of my research, it said that it had been fourth year for California to have the drought. Water supply is no longer enough in California, our government was trying to think a best useful way to solve this problem. Some people think that desalination is a good solution because it cost less money and can also recycle the energy.…

    Ecological Issues

In this day and age, we are facing (and denying/ignoring) many ecological issues. Many people say that these issues aren’t really there and that everyone is being dramatic about it. Every century, the United States alone rises 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit. That may not seem like a big deal but just that little bit is concerning and just might cause our world to go downhill. As our temperatures rise, so do the oceans. According to geology.com, if our sea level were to rise just a mere seven meters, big cities in the U.S. such as Miami, San Francisco, and Seattle would begin to flood. Every year, our temperatures are rising. The record for hottest summer has been yet again broken in many places due to these temperature rises. There are many other ecological issues that are currently occurring, such as biological diversity. There are most likely millions of undiscovered organisms that are being killed due to the selfishness of people building unneeded buildings, such as malls. Forests are being torn down to make room for people’s desires for new technology. Even though it is a good thing that we are diving deeper into different ways of using technology, we are also irreversibly taking away organisms that could benefit us in ways people didn’t know were possible. Unfortunately, many people don’t take these issues as seriously as they should. There are many misconceptions about these issues, like the fact that it isn’t happening or isn’t a big deal, that cause people to dismiss them and go on with their daily life activities. As they do this, they are only digging this world deeper into a hole that can’t be fixed. On the bright side, if we start now, we can reverse the damaging effects that have happened and create a better tomorrow. As stated before, the main two earth endangering problems are climate change and ecological biodiversity.…
