Drug abuse is a problem that has been on the rise among our society today. Drug abuse can only hinder or restrain us from accomplishing goals or dreams in life. People sometimes feel they are too bright, too powerful, too much in control to become addictive. Addiction can trap anyone. The sooner people seek help for drug abuse , the better chance they have of gaining control of their life again. Today , the number one reason for drug abuse is peer pressure. Seven drugs people in our society appear to be abusing are : (1)narcotics such as opiates or opioids ; (2) sedaitves such as barbiturates ; (3) stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines; (4) antianxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines ; (5) pain medications such as OxyContin; (6) hallucinogens such as LSD ; and (7) caffeine and nicotine , which are also drugs of dependence ( ) . With that being said narcotics are drugs used to alleviate pain , induce relaxtion and pleasant reverie , and also alleviate anxiety and tension. Eaxamples of narcotics are : Opium, Morphine, Codeine, and also Heroin. Sedatives are drugs used to reduce tension , facilitate social interaction , “blot out” feelings or events , and also reduce tension. The major sedatives are alcohol (ethanol) . Stimulants are used to decrease feelings of fatigue , stay awake for longer periods of time , increase endurance , and stimulate sex dive. Examples of stimulates are Benzedrine, Dexedrine, Methedrine, and Cocaine(396). Hallucinogens are drugs that are though to induce hallucinations. The major example of a hallucinogen drug is LSD ,odorless, colorless , and tasteless drug. After taking LSD a person goes through about 8 hours of change in sensory perception ( 404 ). Not only do people in regular society around us abuse drugs, even celebrities abuse drugs. People in society look up to celebrities and want to be just like them. Even when celebrities are drug abusers they are still role models to many
