Erin Fujinami Drug Cartels in Mexico Drug trafficking has become an increasingly growing problem in the world today. Illegal drug trade is a worldwide black market consisting of production, distribution, packaging, and sale of illegal substances. Although today’s "War on Drugs" is a modern phenomenon, drug problems have been a common problem throughout history. Mexico is responsible for 90% of drugs that comes from the southern border of the United States. Mexico has been a producer and distributer of illegal drugs for generations; the country now finds itself in a battle with powerful and well-financed drug cartels. By 2011, the Sinaloa Cartel controlled 45 percent of drug trade in Mexico. Today, “the Sinaloa Cartel is the single largest and most powerful drug trafficking organization in the Western hemisphere.” El Chapo escaped from a maximum security prison in July 2015, exposing the corruption in the law enforcement communities of Mexico. Today, the Gulf Cartel operates along eastern Mexico, and is based in the border city of Matamoros, with operations in Tamaulipas and Veracruz. With increased organized crime, Mexico has “become a major destination for sex trafficking, as well as a transit point and supplier of victim to the United States.” Federal border authorities report that coyotes also kidnap, rape, and abandon their clients. Migrant children are also at risk. In 2014, over 57,000 unaccompanied immigrant children were detained in south Texas in about a one-year period. The groups involved in the human sex trafficking are part of lucrative prostitution rings. Los Zetas have branched out of their drug dealing business into kidnapping and sex trafficking. The cartel has also teamed up with Salvadorian gangs like Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha. People need to be able to figure out and talk to each other about how to stop this drug problem going through U.S. Another helpful way individuals can get involved Is by stop letting illegal drugs come in through the Mexican and U.S. border, this is a serious problem and we need to realize that this is no joke. Over the years U.S. has been getting most if not all of the drugs from Mexico, and if they control the border better this problem could stabilize and get better. The drug war in Mexico is happening because of poor government and they are too scared to even do anything about these cartel leaders running their business and making billions of dollars yearly. We the people need to come to a stand and make a statement about how innocent people are dying over in Mexico because of these drugs and we need to figure out reasons to stop this war on drugs not just in Mexico but all over the world. The only real reasons drugs are still around and people can abuse them is because of the revenue they are
