Factors that can influence an individual's predisposition to engage in drug use range from biological, environmental, social and cultural, moreover, the abundance of modeling and advertisement of drugs by celebrities, models, athletes, and other popular icons
are also highly influential factors that can foster the use of drugs, as noted in the text. Although, one's proclivity to use drugs is largely determined by genetics, environmental and societal factors can promote it just as easily.
Overall, I think one's inclination to turn to drugs starts with something that runs even deeper than genetics, it's family. As stated by the text, the family has a tremendous impact on drug related behavior in adolescents. As noted by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), children with parents that possess poor social/management skills, antisocial or criminal behavior, or display feelings of powerlessness over the perceived lack of impact in their authority are all tokens of a self-fulfilling prophecy that their children will turn to drug use. In actuality, the attitude, actions, and involvement of parents in the lives of their children are what make all the difference.
As with obesity and health, I stand firm in my belief that a strong understanding and awareness of the impacts that come with drug use is necessary to combat its prevalence in today's society. This knowledge needs to carry over to all areas of life, including one's family and immediate environment. I believe that feelings of indifference and powerlessness are at the root of drug use today. While I don't find drug use to be an invasion of privacy, I certainly don't think that such measures would be necessary if everyone was educated on the topic and engaged in responsible drinking (if such a thing exists...). Knowledge of the threat you're up against restores the power to the individual and eliminates feelings of helplessness, so too can the misuse of drugs be eliminated from the workplace.
