Putting on shoes getting ready to go play the first college home game of our season, and suddenly a man comes up to me out of breath and says, “Excuse me, sir, I was told to come and explain to you that you will not be able to play your game today, or any more games for that matter, because your drug test came back positive.” My stomach dropped, and I just sat in the locker room not knowing what to do. Professional athletes should be drug tested because they are an influence to many kids of all ages, for their own personal safety, and for the future of their sport.
Kids of all ages pay attention to professional athletes because they are an example to more people than they know. “For many male high school athletes, pro athletes are major influences (Schwab).” Children of all ages who are athletic, especially boys, look up to that one role model that they have on their favorite professional college team and would do anything to try to be like them. Most pro athletes do not even realize that they have a kid who shadows their every move somewhere in the world, but they do. “They [kids] are influenced by their [athletes] drug use (Schwab).” It is very critical to make the right decisions while in a professional sport. Many students get tempted with taking drugs because they want to, but it is not the way to live. Especially if you are an athlete, you might as well say goodbye to your career if you choose to transcend down the terrible path of taking drugs. Keep an open mind when you are about to do something that will affect you in the future because there is no doubt it will. Take advantage of the accountability your coach and team gives you because they are there to help.
