Why was Saul chosen, and, ultimately, why was he rejected? Saul had been traveling in search for his wandering donkeys. When the donkeys were nowhere to be found he thought to go back home before his father was to begin worrying about him. God had spoken with Samuel the day prior and told Samuel that he would meet a man from Benjamin and to anoint him and make him ruler of Israel. When Samuel saw Saul, God spoke to him and told him that this was the man to make the ruler of Israel.
