Dynamic Transportation Routing In Urban Areas Using
LPA* Algorithm

Abstract:

The objective of Intelligent Transport System is to find out the optimal route for the vehicles to reach their destinations. vehicle routing is done in two phases. In the first phase Traffic Information System Collects the updated Traffic Status and stores it in the traffic information center. The Traffic Information System Consists of wired or wireless infrastructure and adhoc Vehicular communications. This information will be used for vehicle navigation. In the second phase LPA* vehicle path suggestion algorithm is used for finding the optimal route for the vehicle to reach the destination. The vehicle will follow the obtained route to reach the destination.

Congestion wastes a massive amount of time ,fuel and money.Therefore decreasing congestion level may lead to travel time and fuel consumption reduction and more importantly huge cost reduction.The goals of ITS include enhance public safety,reduce congestion ,finding the optimal routes. Finding the efficient routes in ITS can be achieved usig two mechanisms.(1) Traffic information systems, (2) Vehicle routing protocols. With the first mechanism real-time traffic information can be collected, e.g. the density and speed of the vehicles; the second mechanism uses the collected traffic information to obtain the optimal routes.

In this work there are two major phases (1) Updated traffic information collection; (2) Vehicle route suggestion. In the first phase, the capabilities of inter-vehicle communications are used for designing and implementing the traffic Information system. In the second phase, each RSU finds the optimal route by considering the collected traffic information. For this purpose LPA* algorithm is implemented.

The RSU provide services by hosting an application and OBU is a mounted device which use the services provided by the RSU.the device which provide services is termed as provider and the device which use the application is called user .the OBU is associated with each vehicle . It contain no of sensors to collect the information and to process them. With the help of wireless medium the information can be broadcast to other vehicles and to RSU. There may be single or multiple application units which use the services provide bye the provider with the help of OBU connection characteristics.
