The results show that tea tree and eucalyptus have about the same antibacterial activity as the positive control (ampicillin) used in this experiment. Oregano and colloidal silver’s zone of inhibition were closer to h2O, which concludes that at the amount used for both there is no antibacterial…
pH < 7 Basic solutions = pH > 7 • Most biological fluids have pH 6 – 8 – pH values in human stomach can reach 2 • Each pH unit represents a 10-fold difference in H+ & OH- concentrations. Acids and bases • Acids – release H+ ions in water • Bases -- release OH- ions in water • pH is a measure of hydrogen ion (H+) concentration – Lower pH – acidic – Higher pH basic – pH is logarithmic – a difference of 1 (from pH 4 to 5) is actually a ten-fold increase in H+ conc. • From 3 to 7?…
In this lab experiment we did several test to determine what our unknown bacteria was. To determine this we recorded the results of how the bacteria reacted to different media. Depending on the results of each test we could narrow down the different bacteria to determine what our unknown is. This experiment will also determine if our bacteria is a fermenter of sugars and if it is catalase positive. If the bacteria is a fermenter they will use the sugars to make ATP. If the bacteria is a fermenter of lactose/sucrose the EMB plate we used will “clearly differentiate between the colonies of lactose fermenting and non-fermenting microbes. In the same medium sucrose was also included to differentiate between coliforms that were able to ferment sucrose more rapidly than those that were unable to ferment sucrose” (Cheeptham & Lal, 2007).…

The purpose of the current experiment was to determine the pH of various hydrochloric acid and acetic acid solutions, to determine the pH of various salt solutions, to prepare a buffer solution, and determine the effects of adding a strong acid and strong base to the buffer solution versus adding a strong acid and strong base to water. The measured pHs for the hydrochloric acid solutions were 1.6, 2.2, 2.9, and 3.8. The measured pHs for the acetic acid solutions were 2.9, 3.9, 4.2, and 4.4. The pHs measured for the salts were 4.3 for sodium chloride, 7.3 for sodium acetate, 8.9 for sodium bicarbonate, 10.8 for sodium carbonate, 7.9 for ammonium chloride, and 6.9 for ammonium acetate. The pH for the buffer solution and the strong acid was 3.9 and the pH for the buffer solution and the strong base was 11.6. The pH of water with the strong acid added was 3.44 and the pH of water with the strong base added was 13.4…
There are many reasons for identifying an unknown bacterium. The reasons range from medical purposes, such as determining if the unknown could cause ailments in living things or knowing what microorganisms are needed to make antibiotics to other purposes such as knowing the exact microorganism has to be used to make certain foods. This experiment was done by applying methods in order to identify an unknown bacterium.…
In the experiment involving varying pH levels, E. faecalis, S. epidermidis, L. lactis, and L. casei were subjected to different pH levels and then were allowed to incubate in order to determine the minimum, maximum, and optimum pH levels for growth of specific bacterial species. It was found that lower pH levels between 2 and 4 inhibited or promoted little to no growth for E. faecalis, S. epidermidis, and L. casei. It is evident that these bacteria were resistant to alkaline environments, however, it should be noted that certain mechanisms must have been acquired or involved in maintaining equilibrium within the bacterial cell. High alkalinity generally leads to physiological problems within microbes including the disruption of plasma membrane…
The purpose to this lab was to isolate and identify two unknown bacteria from a mixed culture provided to us by our instructor. This study was done by applying all of the methods that have been instructed on thus far in microbiology laboratory class. Each test performed, provided us with some key information about the unknown microbes in question and how the bacteria function.…
On the first day, one plate was streaked qualitatively and left it in the 25 degrees celsius incubator over five days and attempted to gram stain from the test tube. On the second day, took out my plate from the incubator and examined the plate for bacteria. Then, three more plates where streaked qualitatively and placed…

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to find out which substance, alcohol, antibacterial soap, water, or hydrogen peroxide, is the best at preventing the growth of bacteria.…
As the lead homicide investigator for this case I had recently learned that the crime lab has concluded that the finger print that was recovered belonged to the boyfriend, they were from a piece of notebook paper found under the body of the victim. Interviews are conducted in criminal cases for the purpose of gathering information from people who have, or may have, knowledge needed in the investigation. (Swanson, Chamelin, Territo & Taylor, 2012) However with the information that was recently learned from the evidence that was collected and analyzed by the crime lab, the interview with the boyfriend would now be conducted as an interrogation. Interrogation as opposed to interviewing is designed to match acquired information to a particular suspect in order to secure a confession; it is the process of testing that information and its application to a particular suspect. By means of interrogation we would be able to eliminate the innocent or identify the guilty. (Swanson, Chamelin, Territo & Taylor, 2012)…
