| Evolutionary theories often emphasize that humans have adapted to their physical environment. One such theory hypothesizes that people should spontaneously follow a 24-hour cycle of sleeping and waking—even if they are not exposed to the usual pattern of sunlight. To test this notion, eight paid volunteers were placed (individually) in a room in which there was no light from the outside and no clocks or other indications of time. They could turn the lights on and off as they wished. After a month in the room, each individual tended to develop a steady cycle. Their cycles at the end of the study were as follows: 25, 27, 25, 23, 24, 25, 26, and 25.Using the .05 level of significance, what should we conclude about the theory that 24 hours is the natural cycle? (That is, does the average cycle length under these conditions differ significantly from 24 hours?) (a) Use the steps of hypothesis testing. (b) Sketch the distributions involved, (c) Explain your answer to someone who has never taken a course in statistics. x…

The research investigation aims to find out the sleeping patterns or sleep wake cycle (the species-specific biological pattern of alternating sleep and wakefulness, in humans) of students between the ages of 13-19. Specifically this task aims to investigate the number of hours the students sleep on weekdays compared to weekends and if the participants wake up on the preferred time on school days. It was hypothesised that teenagers (13-19 years old) are achieving less than the recommended hours of sleep (8 -9 hours) on weekends. In addition the time that they wake up on a school morning is not there preferred time. The hypothesis was supported by previous research such as research done by DR Karl S. Kruszelnicki 3 May 2007. In this research DR Kruszelnicki states that the natural circadian rhythm (A circadian rhythm is any biological process which displays oscillation of about 24 hours, they are adjusted to the local environment by external cues called zeitgebers, commonly the most important of which is daylight.)…
East Porter County Schools are making a big mistake with later school start time. Getting out of school later can cut into the time students spend with their parents if they are divorced. Students should as well be more responsible before school. Kids will also think they can stay up even later. So later school start time is going to lead to bad habits and high levels of stress.…
“Sleep deprivation is the most common brain impairment,” a premier sleep scientist, William Dement said. Sleep deprivation is the condition of suffering from a lack of sleep. More than 90% of high school teens are sleep deprived due to the start time of school (Gregoire, 2015). School start times need to change to at least one hour later. Later start times would result in a dramatically better student health, performance, and attendance.…
The purpose of this article is to inform people of the benefits that a later school start time can have on kids. As well as the health benefits of sleep especially on teenagers in high school. Speaker ~ I hope to be viewed as someone of knowledge on the topic I am speaking about. I feel that I have accomplished that by writing previous know information about this…
Research in the 1990s found that later sleep and wake patterns among adolescents are biologically determined; the natural tendency for teenagers is to stay up late at night and wake up later in the morning.(NSF) This research indicates that school bells that ring as early as 7:00 a.m. in many parts of the country stand in stark contrast with adolescents' sleep patterns and needs.(NSF) Teens will most likely be avoid sleep because around 10p.m their brains is telling them…
High schools throughout the United States start their school day at times that are too early for students. Teenagers have a biological wake time, and when schools start early in the morning, it interferes with teens biological clock. According to a study done by Harvard Medical School, young adults need at least nine hours of sleep every night. The study also shows that the need for sleep is never greater in our lives than it is during adolescence, but yet the conflict between school and sleep is at it’s highest while teens are in high school. Many educators believe that if teens just went to bed earlier, they would…
Also, in a landmark study in 1998 of adolescent sleeping habits, the Brown University researcher Mary Carskadon followed 10th-graders who were making the switch to a 7:20 a.m. start time, about an hour earlier than their schedule as ninth-graders. Despite the new schedule, the students went to bed at about the same time as they did the year before: 10:40 p.m. on average. Sleep is food for the brain. Skipping sleep can be very harmful, especially if your driving. Thats why people don't recommend driving at…
Participants interviewed claim to maintain regular sleep schedules with adult members getting 7 hours of hours of sleep each night, and children getting approximately 9 hours per night. Younger children still take daily naps to ensure emotional well-being. The mother denies the use of sleep aids, but the father does require their use at times. He travels often in his job and the frequent changes in physical location make it hard to get adequate sleep. A risk diagnosis of risk for sleep deprivation, along with an actual diagnosis for sleep pattern disturbance (Weber, 2005, p. 580) is identified in this pattern. A proposed intervention for these diagnosis’ would be to establish a bedtime routine to promote circadian rhythm of the effected…
There was one thing everyone dreaded about Highschool, the start time. Waking up early to make sure you were ready for the day and being able to catch the bus. High School start times are the reason for so many teens not being able to graduate on time, students grades being low, and the reason for such a low attendance rate. The start time for High School needs to be pushed back later in the morning, this will help kids perform their best during school, make kids so they are present and will help to get more kids to graduate on time. The later start time for High School will truly benefit the students. Several schools have pushed their start time back and the students and schools have made great progression, students have a better chance of…

It is argued that changing the start time of school would be senseless because a later start would lead to a later, and the time required would still remain constant. But, when someone goes to sleep should also be accounted for in considering if someone is getting optimal sleep. Lack of sleep can cause “weight gain and eating disorders and increased risk of obesity, cardiovascular problems, and diabetes; reduced immunity; depression; anxiety; substance abuse; mood…
